The June, 1990 issue of The Hockey News reports that Toronto has signed four collegians. On May 24, the Maple Leafs inked LW Joe Sacco (BU, drafted 1987) and D Jeff Serowik (Providence, 1985). On May 31, they signed G Damian Rhodes (Michigan Tech, 1987) and D Leonard Esau (St Cloud, 1988). Sacco passed up his senior year and so the powerful Commonwealth Line of Sacco, Shawn McEachern and Tony Amonte is no more. Serowik was perhaps the second-best defenseman in Hockey East this past year after All-Universe Greg Brown. Esau had a lot to do with St Cloud's challenging Alaska-Anchorage for the independent bid, and Rhodes has had a decent couple of years at Michigan Tech despite getting little help from his teammates. If anything, the folks at Newmarket (AHL) should be happy with the signings. There is no mention of Colgate goalie Dave Gagnon signing with Detroit, which was reported back on May 22 by Bill Fenwick in this group. Maybe the Detroit reporter went on (early) vacation. :-) - mike
