Yes, Maine will experience TWO solar eclipses within the next seven months

A partial solar eclipse on October 14, 2023
and a total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024!
This second eclipse will, alas, only be total along the northern and western parts of the state. However, even down here in Portland, the Sun will be more than 90% obscured during maximum.

We all know that retinae smolder and sizzle when one looks directly at the Sun.  Protection is required. Fortunately, the Southworth Planetarium is selling eclipse glasses and we would be happy to mail them to you.

The glasses cost $2.00 a pair.

If you would like some of these glasses sent to you, please just send a reply. We'll send the eclipse glasses within three business days following receipt of your e-mail.    We'll enclose a business reply envelope so that you may pay after you receive them.

Available while supplies last! (which, by the way, has to be the most pointless and obvious statement ever posted in any advertisement. )

We will add a $1.00 charge for mailing, independent of the number of pairs you request.

The April 8, 2024 eclipse, dubbed the Second Great American Eclipse,* is expected to be the most watched total solar eclipse in world history.   Approximately 35 - 55 million people could see this event.     We want YOU to be one of them!

YES: the Southworth Planetarium will be open on April 8, 2024.  We'll watch the partial eclipse right here in Portland.  We'll also show a live stream of the total eclipse on our dome.   Join us for this "Afternoon of the Crescent Sun" event.

*The first occurred on August 21, 2017
