At approximately 1:10pm this afternoon there was a network outage impacting
many or all University locations for approximately four minutes affecting
connectivity to and from the University network from the Internet.  The
cause was an optical link failure, possibly related to the similar issue
experienced on June 29th, though that is not confirmed at this time.  The
link failure caused services to fail over to a backup path, and we believe
all affected services are operational again at this time.

Work is currently ongoing to troubleshoot the root cause of the issue, and
further details will be posted when available.  If you are still
experiencing issues you feel are related to this event, please contact
Networkmaine to report and troubleshoot them.  Please note that if you
connect to any University resources such as VPN or jabber, you may need to
restart those connections to restore operation.
