WATERSHED CENTER FOR THE CERAMIC ARTS Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts is a not-for-profit organization located in mid-coast Maine, dedicated to supporting artists who create with clay. THE WATERSHED WORKSHOP FOR PEOPLE WITH HIV/AIDS In 1991 Gustavo Gonzales, an art therapist from New York City, who was working with clients at the Gay Men’s Health Crisis, was invited to coordinate a week-long session at Watershed. The members of the initial group were primarily from Provincetown MA, a connection made through a Watershed board member. The success of that endeavor led Lynn Duryea, one of the three artist founders of Watershed, to determine the workshop should continue to be offered annually, which it was, from 1992 until 2004. In two of those years, an additional workshop was added, so that a total of 15 workshops were presented. Participants were primarily from the Northeast, but also came from the South and California. The eight-day workshop was envisioned and structured as a way to see how community and creativity could positively affect people’s lives, no matter what their circumstances. One hundred and forty-five participants, from 1991-2004, lived and worked at Watershed, alongside the resident staff, all of whom were active ceramic artists. The energy and camaraderie was amazing. Needless to say, in the early 1990’s, people living with HIV/AIDS were not often invited to live and work in community settings. It is commendable that the staff and board of Watershed was willing to support this endeavor. -- *Susie R.
