*TUESDAY, OCTOBER 19, 2021*

Dear colleague,

Yesterday, the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and
Human Services, and Education ("LHHS") released its proposed funding bill
for Fiscal Year (FY) 2022. *Under this bill, the Federal TRIO Programs
would receive an increase of $185.8 million or a 17% increase, for a total
appropriation of $1.28 billion for FY 2022 (program year 2022-23)*. We're
well on our way to doubling TRIO in the next four years!

In addition to providing a boost in the number and size of awards in the
upcoming competitions for *Upward Bound*, *Upward Bound Math-Science*,
*Veterans
Upward Bound*, and the* Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate programs*, the
legislation also directs the Department of Education to use part of the
allocation to fund high-scoring applications in the FY21 *Talent Search*
and *Educational Opportunity Centers* and FY20 *Student Support Services*
competitions. The proposed Senate bill would also increase the maximum *Pell
Grant* by $400 to $6,895 and provide a $32 million increase or 9% increase
for *GEAR UP*, for a total appropriation of $400 million. All told, this
bill represents another major step forward for low-income, first-generation
students and the programs that serve them.

*It is the work of TRIO educators, parents, students and alumni that have
brought us to this point*. By connecting your students and programs with
Members of Congress and congressional staff throughout the year through
local (and virtual) visits, sharing updates about your students' success
and continuing to champion our message, you have brought us another step
closer to achieving our goal - Double TRIO, Double Pell! *Please thank your
Senators for their past support of TRIO, and ask them to support this TRIO
funding increase as the Senate bill moves forward*. Please be sure to
also *invite
your Senators* to visit your TRIO program for your First-Generation College
Celebration Day <https://t.congressweb.com/l/?MKDJVHGAHVNRNYA> on *November
8*. Contact info for all Senators and their education legislative
assistants can be found here <https://t.congressweb.com/l/?MKDJVHGAHVTSOZJ>.

Thank you for your continued advocacy and support of TRIO students and
programs!

Sincerely,
