South Portland will be host to a FREE two day workshop this January centered around how your district can plan to bring equitable access to computer science for all students. This event is called SCRIPT and is a product of CSforAll. To date ten Maine districts have participated. Our goal is to add at least another five districts to the group. The workshop is applicable to all school districts, regardless of their experience with computer science. Personally I am no computer science expert, and reached out to a friend at CSforAll who told me about this program and asked us to host an event.

To participate, districts must bring a well balanced team, comprised of at least 1 district leader/decision maker, 1 school leader/decision maker and 1 teacher. If possible, 1 media specialist/librarian and 1 guidance counselor also make great additions to a district team.

SCRIPT does not presume participants are experts or have taught computer science. The language and process is neutral. The process involves districts assessing themselves on five different rubrics, including curriculum, leadership and teacher capacity. As district teams go through those rubrics, you create 3 month, 6 month and long term goals for CS in your district - using resources you already have.

The key thing about SCRIPT is looking for ways to integrate CS into existing structures. CSforAll understands CS education will not survive if it's presented as "one more thing" for teachers to do. Instead, we identify ways to leverage existing courses, structures and processes that CS education can enhance.

Please share this with anyone else in your district who might be interested. To sign up, one person per district needs to fill out the interest form - linked below or the Apply Now button on Project>Login's events page.

If you plan on attending, please fill out the interest form here so we can reserve your spot as this event could fill up.

Last, if there are any barriers preventing you from participating, please let me know so I can see what can be done. Travel and lodging can be covered, and subs can potentially be paid for.

Thank you - Andy Wallace ([log in to unmask])
