We’ve followed his journey and tried to contact him a few times… still hoping to get him to come to Bowdoin UB to speak—he participated in UB while at Shead but with his home situation, he was unable to join us in the summers because he had to work, so the impact and connection wasn’t as strong as with most students. We were a small part of his journey to Bates, however, and many of our students now take advantage of scholarships that he helps support for Downeast students!!

 

He’s had a remarkable journey and really believes in giving back!

We hope you will join President Cummings and the USM Foundation next Thursday, September 6, for Living the American Dream. We'll celebrate our Inaugural Promise Scholars and hear a special presentation by Shirl Penney, who grew up in Eastport, ME, and overcame tremendous obstacles to achieve his dream of a college education. By age 22, he had begun a successful career in finance and in 2015 was named to Investment News' influential 40 Under 40 list. Shirl is an inaugural Aspen Institute Financial Leader Fellow.
