*What is happening?* At 10:00 PM maintenance will be performed on two of the LDAP servers to ensure the stability of Authentication and Authorization of user accounts to various resources provided by UMS and our contracted third parties. *How long will it take?* One system is user-facing and the other is not. For the user-facing system the downtime is expected to be 10 minutes or less, and most things using it will fail over to another member of the cluster. The back-end system that requires attention should be resuming normal operation within half an hour. *Why is this work necessary?* If this work is not performed then (a) interactive user authentication may become unreliable, and (b) regular changes to user accounts may not take effect within a reasonable period of time. *What happens if the work is not successful?* In the case of the user-facing server most things using it should transparently fail over to the other host providing the same service until it is working again. If the back-end server does not resume normal account maintenance processes on its own within a reasonable period of time then staff will troubleshoot it and manually trigger any needed processes.
