The Department of Marine Resources is seeking candidates for a Marine Scientist II vacancy in Boothbay Harbor.
JOB DESCRIPTION: This position will serve as the Department of Marine Resources (DMR) Bureau of Marine Science’s geospatial data and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) lead; as the point for implementation of emergent technology with the Bureau’s existing
data collection programs; and as the Oil Spill Response Coordinator for DMR. As the GIS lead, this position will be required to utilize direct and indirect (remote sensing) sensor technologies, collect, organize, condition, and prepare for use in GIS sensed
data for various Bureau programs, perform spatial and/or temporal analysis using GIS, and evaluate, develop and implement efficient GIS workflows for all Bureau users. Required skills include an understanding of marine or environmental sciences, a strong background
using GIS applications and experience maintaining spatial datasets both within and outside relational database management systems. Responsibilities also include coordinating GIS application deployments with the Office of Information Technology, representing
DMR interests in the State’s GIS coordinator forum and engaging other State Government GIS users to identify mutually beneficial GIS data collection, sharing and collaborative workflow development efforts.
As the point for implementation of emergent technologies for the Bureau, this position will be responsible for vetting new systems and updating work flows using new technologies, such as integrating remote electronic data collection into various Bureau programs,
as well as handling integrations with existing systems. As the Oil Spill Response Coordinator for the Department, the position represents DMR at planning meetings, exercises, and oil spill events, as well as acting as liaison with responders at the Department
of Environmental Protection and the United States Coast Guard. Duties include being on-call for oil spill events in marine habitats, keeping management and relevant staff informed of situations as they arise, advising DEP of sensitive habitats and species
and suggesting protection strategies, coordinating the opening and closing of fisheries as needed, helping to draft contingency plans and protocols, and maintaining an adequate level of training for response.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A Bachelor’s degree in a scientific, technical, or engineering field or equivalent in directly related work experience and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in the field of marine resource research and/or
management or related field. Preference will be given to previous experience in a supervisory capacity. Equivalent experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
PREFERENCES: Preference will be given to applicants with the following:
• Knowledge of ArcGIS, Access, R, and Excel is strongly preferred.
• Ability to evaluate, develop, and implement efficient GIS workflows and databases, as well as perform spatial or temporal analyses.
• Experience working with remote field data collection techniques.
• Knowledge of marine ecosystems and oil spill response is a plus, but not required.
