Opportunity to Increase Resolution of Aerial Imagery & more

Are you a municipality, RPC, or State Agency considering purchase of high-resolution imagery, building footprints, or other planimetric information?

The State of Vermont has a contract to collect statewide orthoimagery which includes an option to “buy-up products,” including: 1) higher resolution orthoimagery (upgrading from 30cm to 15cm GSD), and 2) planimetrics (building / impervious surface footprints).

Municipalities interested in taking advantage of these options can coordinate with their Regional Planning Commission to submit a ‘buy-up’ application to VCGI.

Product details, a pricing schedule, and instructions for how a State Agency or Regional Planning Commission can work with the State to acquire these products is available in the buy-up guide.

The time frame for submitting a request is October 1st through December 1st.

UN Open GIS Initiative – Open Source Geospatial S/W for the UN

As the open source geospatial software becomes a fundamental basis of GIS applications, there is a strong demand from the UN for many peace keeping operations. In order to respond to this demand, we have launched the UN Open GIS initiative since March 2016. The objective of the initiative is to identify and develop open source geospatial software and services that meets the requirements of UN operations, taking full advantage of the expertise of mission partners including partner nations, technology developed by contributing countries, international organizations, academia, NGO’s, private sector. Three teams (called Spirals) have been actively working to achieve this objective. The first team (Spiral I) aims at developing and deploying an open source geospatial information infrastructure for the UN as well as a geo-portal. The second team (Spiral II) provides the capacity building programs on open source geospatial software to the UN staffs. The third team (Spiral III) intends to implement open source geospatial analysis tools for divers UN operations. We are also planning Spiral IV for geospatial data collection task. In this webinar, the background, motivations, visions, and roadmap of the initiative will be presented as well as the activities and technical aspects of each spirals. The UN Open GIS Initiative is open, your contributions are always very much welcome.

Public Beta Release - VT Open Geodata Portal

The VT Center for Geographic Information (VCGI) is pleased to release a BETA version of Vermont’s new Open Geodata Portal (http://geodata.vermont.gov). VCGI and its partners have built a website that connects publishers and consumers and helps them find, explore, contribute, and use geospatial information and resources. The VT Open Geodata Portal (Beta) “federates” geodata, web services, and geospatial applications from many sources (publishers) including several State agencies (e.g. VT Agency of Natural Resources, VT Agency of Transportation, and VT Agency of Human Services). VCGI would like to thank our partners for their dedication to improving access to Vermont’s geospatial assets.

What do you think? Please take a few minutes to explore the BETA site, kick the tires, and let us know what you think. Your input will help us improve the website. We plan to release a final version by the end of the year. Thanks!

P.S. Known “bugs/limitations” have been documented here.

Job Opportunities

GIS Database Administrator

Rhode Island Department of Transportation, Providence, RI

Working for the Office of Transportation Information Systems in the Division of Planning at the State of Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT), this position entails managing a SQL Server database environment that supports GIS, Asset Management, Traffic, Crash, Bridge, and other transportation-related applications. This job opportunity closes at midnight on November 10th.

A postdoctoral research opportunity

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Office of Research and Development (ORD)/National Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory (NHEERL) - Atlantic Ecology Division (AED) in Narragansett, RI

A postdoctoral research opportunity is currently available at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Office of Research and Development (ORD)/National Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory (NHEERL). This appointment will be served with the Atlantic Ecology Division (AED) in Narragansett, RI.

The research participant will be involved with a Region 10 RARE project "Big cold and small cold: Quantifying Thermal Regime Metrics for Policy Development in Pacific Northwest (PNW) Streams." Cold temperatures are critical to the survival of salmonids, the majority of which are listed as endangered or threatened in the Pacific Northwest (PNW). High temperatures in PNW streams are the most prevalent violation of water quality standards in Idaho, Oregon, and Washington with thousands of river miles on the 303(d) impaired waters list for temperature. TMDLs, salmon recovery plans, and other watershed recovery plans have been or are in the process of being developed to address high temperatures that harm salmonids in the Pacific Northwest, and it remains as the foremost issue to be addressed to protect and restore salmonid habitat. Cold water tributaries are a key element to providing conditions for salmon to survive and thrive by 1) providing cold temperatures for spawning; 2) cooling downstream waters which may be warmer; and 3) for heterogeneous river systems, providing cold water pockets during warm summer time afternoon for salmon to rest until temperatures cool. Climate change models showing increasing temperatures in PNW streams further increases the urgency to establish tools to protect and restore cold water necessary for salmon survival. This project will take these new tools to the next level – identifying restored thermal regimes based upon predictor-response relationships that will be developed for different watersheds in the Pacific Northwest
