Integrated Statistics is looking for an outreach technician to assist the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) in support of the Maine Atlantic Salmon Museum. The Maine Atlantic Salmon Museum, founded in 2014, is dedicated to recording and preserving the rich history and traditions of Atlantic salmon angling in Maine and to promoting the conservation of Maine salmon rivers. The Museum seeks to collect, interpret and display all materials related to salmon and other sea-run species. Atlantic salmon are listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act and as such, NOAA Fisheries is one of two agencies charged with protecting and recovering them.

 

The technician will research and develop content for one or two temporary, portable exhibits, to be displayed in various local libraries, museums, historical societies, and visitor centers, and also to be presented online.  The technician will be based either at the University of Maine or at the NOAA Fisheries Maine Field Station. 

Duties
The Technician will be responsible for these tasks:

• Conducting research on the following themes:

1. Women in river conservation and fly fishing, with an emphasis on salmon fishing and Atlantic salmon rivers.
2. Documenting the design and build of cane fly rods and salmon flies, and how these elements developed from approximately 1850-1970.
3. Salmon fishing club histories, with a focus on socioeconomics (maps of memberships, yearbook of notable participants, etc.)

•  Recording and creating a detailed inventory of reference materials and artifacts encountered during research phase.

• Drafting text and compiling lists of images, artifacts, etc.

• Working with museum board members, NOAA Fisheries, and Sea Grant to develop display format and layout.

• Managing production and publication of display materials (physical and digital)

• Working with the museum to coordinate exhibit schedule.

Qualifications

The following qualifications are sought for this position:

• Education or experience in fisheries, marine science, history, anthropology, museum studies, or human ecology.
• Experience and interest in museums, archival methods, historical research.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
• Demonstrated organizational skills, including the ability to track and meet project milestones and to complete deliverables on schedule.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  
• Demonstrated ability to envision, design, and construct communications materials.
  
• Familiarity with Atlantic salmon and the history of Atlantic salmon fishery in Maine is highly desirable.

The position will be part-time (20 hours/wk) with an expected duration of 6 months. The rate of pay will be $20-22, depending on qualifications and experience.
