I only mentioned mailman as a possible means to accommodate archives. Not saying that I like it - I don't particularly care for email as it is.

I know its not possible to bring the archives into Google Apps, but we could start fresh from there as a platform if folks wanted.

I mentioned Google Apps for Education, thinking that despite your liking Mailman, it may not last long at your shop (it wouldn't if I was in charge, unless significant structure depended on it ... and even then, I'd work to omit it.

Listserv remains for now at UMaine System due to its 600-700 lists, ID management support that would need to be built since list names would be in the Maine.edu namespace, and support for lists where the subscribers come directly and automatically from LDAP.

But I digress from hockey content and apologize to the list members.  Obligatory hockey content: it appears that the NCAA will not institute 4x4 overtime this season.

We are a Google Apps shop - and we can do it that way too if the collective group didn't care about the archives and limited abilities for users outside to join. I think our Mailman service is a great option for this that (as of this moment) will live on and can fully accommodate users on public email domains.

I snagged one of the logs - I'll have one of our guys try it out and see if we can import it.

The hockey-l archives are stored in monthly logs.  You can see the names of the log files on the hockey-l home page at http://lists.maine.edu/archives/hockey-l.html

Each post in a log is separated by a line of 73 equal signs.

To get a copy of a log, send email to [log in to unmask] and in the body of the email enter "get hockey-l.log1601", for example (to get the January archives)

Comment:  While Mailman is OK as mailing list processor, I've got to think any institution running it should be evaluating the cloud alternatives.  For example, if U of Alaska uses Google for Education, Google Groups will be a cheaper and superior offering.  Also, does Mailman do DMARC so that, for example, an AOL, Yahoo! or Google user may post and have it distributed successfully to all subscribers?

Thanks Wayne,

I recalled looking at the UMaine lists site ages ago, but I must have recalled something else. Regardless, do you know what format the archives are in? Mailman spits out flat text files, so possibly a conversion program may not be necessary with some proper massaging assuming the files are human-readable. If you have access to export said files, I could give it a shot if you send them my way.

Thanks for the offer!

Mailman is not Listserv ® and a product of LSoft (LSoft.com).  The archives differ in format and so are not directly compatible.  However, if you can write or find a program to convert them, this could be a good choice.  I suspect such conversion programs may exist, as I recall the reverse function does exist.

Thanks Wayne for keeping this going. Its been fun to follow.

If folks want the same functionality I can host this list at the University of Alaska. We use the same listserv application (Mailman) and may be able to move the archives over with some coordination from U of Maine if folks here are interested.

I also want to thank Wayne for all he has done for Hockey-L over the decades. I hardly post
to Hockey-L (or anyplace), but I do still enjoy reading what other others post. I also still use
the archives for research, as many times I am able to find what I'm looking for in them, so I
hope that they can be saved as well.
