EDUCATION HIGHLIGHTS

Congratulations to Karen Pianka, who successfully defended her graduate theses in marine science and marine policy. Pianka worked on the original Aquaculture in Shared Waters project with UMaine researcher Teresa Johnson.

We are now accepting applications for several NOAA graduate student fellowships and undergraduate scholarships, with several deadlines in January and February.

Job Opportunity! The Signs of the Seasons New England Phenology Program seeks an assistant coordinator.

Signs of the Seasons is currently scheduling regional spring training opportunities for interested volunteers throughout the state. Please visit our website, and sign up for a training via our volunteer interest form!

A new course is available to commercial fishermen and others interested in learning more about getting into aquaculture. Scheduled to begin in late January in the Thomaston area, the 2016 Aquaculture in Shared Waters course aims to promote diversification along Maine’s working waterfront through training and support for fishermen and family members who want to branch out into aquaculture.

EXTENSION HIGHLIGHTS

Congratulations to Marine Extension Team member Keri Kaczor, Maine Healthy Beaches Program coordinator, for the 2015 Mitchell Center Award for “Outstanding contribution by an external partner to sustainability research.”

The Preserving Working Waterfronts Oral History collection premiered at the recent National Working Waterfront Symposium in Tampa, Florida. Three of the ten audio slide shows in the collection are from Maine. Tremont fisherman Wayne Davis shared his story of his family’s efforts to protect their lobster wharf. Shey Conover from the Island Institute talks about the Mapping Maine’s Working Waters Initiative, and Bill Needleman describes planning for Portland’s working waterfront. MET members Kristen Grant and Natalie Springuel worked on both the project and the conference.

RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS

The Call for Abstracts for the 2016 Maine Sustainability & Water Conference deadline is January 25. Several marine-themed sessions are being considered, including several on climate change, safe beaches and shellfish, dams and decision-making, water research and monitoring in Acadia National Park, and A Rising Tide Floats All Boats: a session focused on Maine’s coasts and estuaries where diverse partners have collaborated to define problems, develop solutions and engage stakeholders. Presentations will share challenges and successes with an eye toward preparing coastal communities to be resilient in the face of change.

The deadline for submitting proposals for Maine Sea Grant Program Development Funds has changed to April 1, 2016.
