NEWS FROM MAINE SEA GRANT | WINTER 2015

Happy New Year from all of us at Maine Sea Grant!

EDUCATION HIGHLIGHTS

Applications are now being accepted for graduate fellowships with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA): the Sea Grant Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship, the NOAA Coastal Management Fellowship, and NOAA Fisheries-Sea Grant Fellowships in Population and Ecosystem Dynamics and Marine Resource Economics. The NOAA Hollings Scholarship Program for undergraduate students is also accepting applications through January 30, 2015. These are all wonderful opportunities for Maine students interested in marine and coastal science and policy.

EXTENSION HIGHLIGHTS

Marine extension associates are involved in emerging efforts to develop aquaculture for American eel. Last October, scientists, eel biologists, eel merchants, entrepreneurs, and government regulators attended a workshop on the eel industry sponsored by the USDA Northeastern Regional Aquaculture Center and organized by Barry Costa-Pierce (University of New England), Michael Timmons (Cornell University), Dana Morse (Maine Sea Grant) and David MacNeill (New York Sea Grant). Despite complications resulting from the potential listing of American eel as an endangered species, workshop participants concluded that the development of a local industry would benefit both wild fishermen and aquaculture entrepreneurs. Discussions will continue at the Northeast Aquaculture Conference and Exposition (January 14-16 in Portland, Maine) and the Fishermen's Forum (March 5-7 at Samoset Resort).

RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS

Maine Sea Grant invites preliminary proposals for research projects to be funded in the period February 2016 through January 2018. Proposed research activities may be one or two years in duration. Assuming no changes in the federal Sea Grant appropriation and the requirements of the non-research components of the Maine Sea Grant program, an estimated $450,000 will be available to support research projects over the two-year funding period. Preliminary proposals are due Friday, February 27, 2015.
