BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION:  This position provides professional cartographic, GIS, and related data management, mapping, and spatial analysis services to the Bureau of Land & Water Quality.  Primary responsibilities include day-to-day GIS and mapping support for staff within the Bureau of Land & Water Quality, and assistance with planning, implementing, and supporting projects that require GIS-related products.  This position works with a diverse group of science and engineering staff to design, maintain, enhance, and analyze spatial and tabular data for GIS projects within the Bureau.  Collaboration on GIS projects also occurs with staff from other state or federal agencies as well as the public, academia, non-profit organizations or consultants. REPRESENTATIVE TASKS:

·   Researches, compiles, updates, expands and maintains files of natural resource data (including the National Hydrography Dataset) in order to maintain current information in the system.

·   Researches, compiles, updates, expands and maintains reference data layers in GIS in order to provide base map data to all agencies using the system.

·   Oversees, directs, and evaluates entry of map and tabular data, including metadata, into GIS in order to ensure data is properly and correctly entered.

·   Compiles, designs, and conducts geographic and statistical analysis of data in order to facilitate studies and produce reports.

·   Provides training and technical support to staff desiring to use GIS in order to allow maximum system utilization.

·   Extracts data and creates/maintains Google Earth and/or ArcGIS Online projects.

·   Designs, prepares, and oversees production of maps, graphs, charts and reports in order to ensure product quality.

·   Provides field assistance for lake, river and marine sampling.

·   Collaborates with GIS staff from other state agencies or outside groups on joint projects.

·   Evaluates and archives older data in order to establish database for long term studies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A six (6) year combination of education, training, and/or experience directly related to the operation, development, and/or maintenance of GIS systems.  Preference will be given to applicants who also have knowledge about water resources including coastal waters, rivers, lakes, wetlands, and groundwater as well as a fundamental understanding of Maine programs, policies, and regulations affecting water quality and environmental management.
