Register!

Spring 2014 course registration begins on Monday 11/4 at 6:00 am for UMA degree students. The spring 2014 page includes details on registration dates for all campuses, a link to the distance learning search, our course list and course descriptions. Please call the Business Office (442-7736) to schedule an advising appointment with Lisa Whitney, Student Services Coordinator or with Dennis Unger, Center Director.

Treat yourself to a pie!

Buy one (or several) of Dad’s Dynamite Pies for Thanksgiving this year. We have extended our sale date until Friday, 11/8! These pies will leave you feeling full and guilt-free with no trans fat, no preservatives, and no fillers! Stop by the office to place your order. The best part is that each sale generates scholarship money! The pick-up date has been changed to Thursday, 11/21 at 1:30pm. FMI, Gwen Shatto.

Attend a student association meeting!

The Student Association meeting on Monday 11/4 at noon is open to all students. The Student Association will promote the Great American Smokeout the week of 11/18 with alternatives to smoking – candies and “how to quit smoking” materials will be available throughout the Center.

Vote!

Remember to cast your ballot on Tuesday, 11/5 in the state-wide election. There are many important issues on the ballot including Question 2 a bond issue to upgrade UMS labs and classrooms.

Learn about management and accounting degree options!

Attend a Business Administration accounting and management information session on Wednesday, 11/6 from noon to 1 pm. In this session, University of Maine at Augusta faculty members, Brenda McAleer and Tom Giordano will discuss local education options available to students who are looking to establish careers in business. Considering a teaching career?

Attend a UMA Pathways to Early Childhood, K-3, and Secondary Education program information session on Thursday, 11/7, from 3:30 to 4:30 pm. In this session, University of Maine at Augusta faculty members, Cindy Dean and Patricia Clark will outline the UMA options available to students who are looking to become certified teachers in one of these areas. On Veterans Day, Monday, 11/11, University College will open only from 4 to 6:45 pm.

Discover USM options (including graduate programs)

The University of Southern Maine is hosting a Fall Open House for Adults, Transfers, & Graduate Students on Wednesday, 11/13 from 4:30 to 6:30 pm in the Abromson Center on the USM Portland Campus. This is a great opportunity to explore undergraduate and graduate options.

Stretch your $$$

Gain skills and confidence to stretch your money, pay your bills, reduce debt, find money for savings, plan for retirement, and set personal financial goals by attending a free, 15 hour “My Money Works: Tools for Smart Money Choices” offered by the Maine Centers for Women, Work and Community. The class begins 11/5, from 6 to 8 pm and runs through 12/3. Please email Shelley Taylor FMI and to register.

Strengthen your career planning!

The UMA Career Development Center is offering a career workshop series by videoconference to our center to help you advance your career planing and job search skills. Workshop options include:

·         Getting Connected on LinkedIn (Wednesday, 11/13, 11am -12:30 pm) This workshop will give an overview of how to use LinkedIn to strengthen your job search skills. Topics will include networking, maintaining a professional online presence, ways to find job postings and more.

·         Intriguing Internships (Monday, 11/18, 9-10:3am) This workshop will go over the nuts and bolts of internships (paid vs. unpaid, academic credit), and how/when to search for internships.

·         Successful Interviewing (Thursday, 11/21, 2-3:30pm) This workshop will show you how to best prepare yourself to ace the job interview.

Attend a job fair and resource expo

The Southern Midcoast Maine Chamber is sponsoring, “Hiring Maine’s Heroes: A Job Fair and Resource Expo”.  This event is scheduled for Wednesday, 11/13 from 10 am to 2 pm at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 2 Columbus Drive in Brunswick and is open to veterans and the general public. All are welcome.

Help us be a respectful neighbor!

Since the implementation of the the new a smoke-free policy we have received several complaints from neighboring homeowners about groups of smokers and smoke drifting to the neighboring properties. Please be aware that the smell and harmful effects of your smoke drift further than you realize. Please refrain from smoking near neighboring homes. Smoking is permitted in your vehicle. Please remember to safely discard smoking material in your vehicle and not on the ground. If you are ready to quit tobacco, the Partnership for A Tobacco-Free Maine offers free online resources and Midcoast Hospital (373-6586) offers free one-on-one help.

Get jabbed!

Help prevent the flu by getting your flu shot. Chans Home Health Care offers flu clinics through-out the region. All clinics are first-come, first-served. Vaccine is for anyone 6-months-of-age or older. Donations accepted, but not required.

Meet-up with a tutor

Set yourself up for a successful semester by connecting early in the semester with a Biology, Writing, Math, or Computing tutor.
