On iPads (and more), Snap (snap.berkeley.edu) is a web-based, Scratch-like application.

This thread is for anyone who has researched any coding tools to add information.  For those of us who are 1:1 with iPads, I think that the tools are scarce.  Most tools seem to be made for the computer.

Please feel free to add to this list.  Our K-5 students have access to laptops, so I'm particularly interested in ANY tools for younger students and iPad tools for older students.  Thanks.

Here are a few things that work on the iPad

  • Codea is an iPad game creation tool.  It is $10 at full price.
  • CargoBot is free.  It is a game, created by Codea.  To play, some coding skills are needed.  OK for young children.
  • Codeacademy - Free online tutorial.  Does not appear to use flash
  • Khan Academy coding lessons.
Things that do NOT work on the iPad
  • CodeHS - Only the first module is free, then $25 or $75 per month depending on plan.  I tried the first lesson.  I could not get the program to run.  I didn't get an error that it used flash, but the "run" button did nothing on the iPad & other functions were also inoperable. (reset, pull down menu, hide sidebar).
  • Scratch.mit.edu - This looks like a great tool, but uses Flash.
