Raise awareness!

October is Domestic Violence Awareness month. New Hope for Women offers support to people in Sagadahoc, Lincoln, Knox and Waldo Counties affected by domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking, and provides educational resources to assist our communities in creating a safer and healthier future. Family Crisis Services offers a similar array of services in Cumberland County.

Attend a student association meeting

The next meeting of the MCHE Student Association will be from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, 10/9/13. All UCBB students are welcome. Please email Lisa Whitney by 10/8/13 if you plan to attend.

Scare yourself at the Bath AutumnFest

How can you resist an event that includes scarecrows, crafts, fashion, zumba, a 5K race and Citizen Involvement Day? Autumnfest is on Saturday, 10/12 in downtown Bath. Citizen Involvement Day offers a perfect chance to learn about resources, services and volunteer opportunities from 30+ nonprofits–be sure to stop by the UCBB table.

Create your future

The Maine Centers for Women, Work, and Community is offering a 24-hour Creating Your Future: Career Planning for the New Economy class to examine work values and interests, identify transferable skills, and explore earning potential. Participants learn about local projected growth industries and identify the skills, education, and training needed to achieve your career goals. Assistance with resume building and job seeking will also be provided. The class meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm beginning on 10/15. Considering an elementary teaching career?

Earn your English degree locally!

The University of Maine at Presque Isle (UMPI) provides local access to a BA in English. Attend a career and information session on 10/17 from 5 to 6 pm to learn about the degree and associated careers. Email Lisa Whitney to sign up for this session.

Sell pies, raise scholarship dough!

We are searching for volunteers to help with the annual pie sale scholarship fundraiser. Sale dates: 10/10-10/28. Pick-up pies: 11/7 @ 3 pm. The hand-crafted in Maine, frozen pies are perfect for your holiday table and even better as a gift! Selling is fun and easy and a great way to connect with others. FMI: Gwen Shatto. There are unconfirmed rumors of a 10/10 pie tasting event in the lobby!

It’s Time

Mental Illness Awareness Week (10/6-10/12) is designed to increase public awareness and reduce the stigma associated with mental illness. The week coincides with National Depression Screening Awareness Day, 10/10.

Use personality type to jump-start your career planning

A three-session Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) Workshop will be held at the Midcoast Center for Higher Education on Tuesday, 10/22, Thursday, 10/24, and Tuesday, 10/29, from 2 to 3:30 pm. The workshop is designed to help an individual learn more about his or her personality and learning style, discover the role of personality in the career planning process, and explore the relationship between personality type and career satisfaction. The workshop is open to students and the public at no cost. Call 442-7736 for the required advance sign-up. Space is limited.

Change a child’s life, forever!

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Bath/Brunswick is seeking volunteers to serve as school-based mentors in several elementary schools. This is a wonderful opportunity to make a difference in a child’s life with a one hour per week commitment during the school year. It could be the start of something BIG.

The Midcoast Center for Higher Education is now a smoke-free environment. Smoking is permitted in your vehicle. Please remember to safely discard smoking material in your vehicle and not on the ground. If you are ready to quit tobacco, the Partnership for A Tobacco-Free Maine offers free online resources and Midcoast Hospital (373-6586) offers free one-on-one help.

Get jabbed!

Help prevent the flu by getting your flu shot. Chans Home Health Care offers flu clinics through-out the region. All clinics are first-come, first-served. Vaccine is for anyone 6-months-of-age or older. Donations accepted, but not required.

Set yourself up for a successful semester by connecting early in the semester with a Biology, Writing, Math, or Computing tutor.
