Attend the free, fun, family-friendly ANCHOR Your Self-Care Fair in downtown Bath on Saturday 9/28 from 9 am to 1 pm. In addition to discovering health and wellness resources, events include: A guided walk through the Shipbuilder’s Trail, trail hikes at Thorne Head (transportation to/from available) and organized bike rides, the Daholov Ipcar Story Walk, a guided Bath Farmer’s Market tour, free yoga and massage, healthy food demonstrations, relaxation techniques, open houses, and a wellness scavenger hunt. Discover the current relevance of the Chinese Exclusion Act

Join us for The Chinese Exclusion Act: What It Can Teach Us About America talk, presented by Ben Railton, PhD. Learn how this act can inform today’s debate about legal/illegal immigration. It will be broadcast to Room 106 on Tuesday, 10/1 from 4-5:15 pm. Be sure to stick around for the Q&A and discussion that will follow. This talk is free and open to the public.

Learn about Toxic Stress and Its Impact on Early Learning and Health

On Friday, 10/4, at 7:30 p.m., Dr. Pat Levitt, an internationally renowned neuroscientist from the University of Southern California and Director of the Developmental Neurogenetics Program at Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles, will deliver a public address at Bowdoin College in Brunswick. Dr. Levitt will share the latest research on the impact of stress and trauma on children’s brain development and the implications of that research for the role of the community and public policy in prevention and intervention. The events will help participants better understand the behavioral and mental health challenges facing very young children, young adults and families, with an emphasis on why recognizing and addressing early childhood development is a community concern. The public lecture in Kresge Auditorium is free and open to the public.

Sell pies, raise scholarship dough!

We are searching for volunteers to help with the annual pie sale scholarship fundraiser. Sale dates: 10/10-10/28. Pick-up pies: 11/7 @ 3 pm. The hand-crafted in Maine, frozen pies are perfect for your holiday table and even better as a gift! Selling is fun and easy and a great way to connect with others. FMI: Gwen Shatto. There are unconfirmed rumors of a 10/10 pie tasting event in the lobby!

It’s Time

Mental Illness Awareness Week (10/6-10/12) is designed to increase public awareness and reduce the stigma associated with mental illness. The week coincides with National Depression Screening Awareness Day, 10/10.

Create your future

The Maine Centers for Women, Work, and Community is offering a 24-hour Creating Your Future: Career Planning for the New Economy class to examine work values and interests, identify transferable skills, and explore earning potential. Participants learn about local projected growth industries and identify the skills, education, and training needed to achieve your career goals. Assistance with resume building and job seeking will also be provided. The class meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm beginning on 10/8. Use personality type to jump-start your career planning

A three-session Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) Workshop will be held at the Midcoast Center for Higher Education on Tuesday, 10/22, Thursday, 10/24, and Tuesday, 10/29, from 2 to 3:30 pm. The workshop is designed to help an individual learn more about his or her personality and learning style, discover the role of personality in the career planning process, and explore the relationship between personality type and career satisfaction. The workshop is open to students and the public at no cost. Call 442-7736 for the required advance sign-up. Space is limited.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Bath/Brunswick is seeking volunteers to serve as school-based mentors in several elementary schools. This is a wonderful opportunity to make a difference in a child’s life with a one hour per week commitment during the school year. It could be the start of something BIG.

The Midcoast Center for Higher Education is now a smoke-free environment. Smoking is permitted in your vehicle. Please remember to safely discard smoking material in your vehicle and not on the ground. If you are ready to quit tobacco, the Partnership for A Tobacco-Free Maine offers free online resources and Midcoast Hospital (373-6586) offers free one-on-one help.

Help prevent the flu by getting your flu shot. Chans Home Health Care offers flu clinics through-out the region. All clinics are first-come, first-served. Vaccine is for anyone 6-months-of-age or older. Donations accepted, but not required.
