Apply for Scholarships Today!

Consider applying for a scholarship! The UMA General Scholarships application deadline is 3/18/13. There are many different types. It’s so easy!

Distance Education Library Workshop – Thurs, Feb 28 at noon. Learn to Research and to Cite Works Properly

Ben Treat, a university librarian, will offer a free and open workshop on using all the resources of the UMS library system without leaving your seat at a URock computer!  His help will include finding good resources and then deciding when and how to cite attributable sources. You will find this information very important to your student success.  Do not wait until that research paper is due! Build those skills now! You may sign up at the URock front desk but it is not necessary.

Annual URock Ice Skating Event at Mid-Coast Rec. Sunday March 3 Noon to 2:00PM Bring Guests!

Please join fellow URockers and their guests at the ice rink at Mid-Coast Recreation Center on Route 90 for 2 hours of free ice skating. Skate rentals are also free! This is a wonderful time to practice your skating or to learn to skate. It’s only URockers on the ice! The rink will have refreshments and drinks for sale. Please sign up at the URock front desk and sign the release form, too. We hope to see lots of you there!

Spring RaP Continues with Charlie Grunder on March 7 at Noon

On Thursday, March 7 at noon Charlie Grunder, Professor of Psychology, University of Maine at Augusta will present Optimism, Pessimism and Locus of Control: How Do They Affect Your Academics? Psychologists study optimism versus pessimism and internal versus external locus of control to predict how individuals respond to stressful events.  How can this framework help predict who succeeds in school?  Professor of Psychology Charles Grunder explores this question in regard to student performance and concludes that prior GPA matters less than attributional style in predicting good grades, the precursor to graduation and career success.

Explore Degrees, Internships and Careers in Business with Tom Giordano

Join us for lunch and a discussion about UMA’s degrees in business plus internship opportunities on Monday, March 18 from 11:30AM – 1:00PM. Professor Tom Giordano and Business Internship Coordinator, Joyce Shelleman, will visit URock for an informal discussion about program requirements, career preparation and how to build in a meaningful internship. Sign up at the URock front desk is encouraged but not required.

File Your Next FAFSA ASAP

It is time to file your next FAFSA which will fund courses for next summer, fall and spring 2014. The earlier you apply, the more aid you may get. Don’t wait until your tax returns is filed. Graduate Intern Offers Counseling Support at URock

Laura French is a graduate intern in USM’s Masters in Clinical Counseling Program. She will be doing her practicum experience this semester at URock and offering free, individualized counseling sessions to URock students. Laura can provide support, problem solving skills and coping strategies as you address many types of issues including depression, anxiety, conflict and life transitions. Writing Tutoring Center

Need help creating a thesis, citing a source, or punctuating a sentence? The UMA Writing Center offers these and other tutoring services to distance learners at UC by phone, email, and videochat. Work on campus or from home. Call (207) 621-3199 to access tutors Monday – Thursday, 9-4. Email [log in to unmask] with an attached essay for feedback within 48 hours. Join a Google Hangout session with Writing Center Coordinator Michelle Lisi, available by appointment every Friday this semester. Not sure which method will work best for you? Technology Support Group Continues Thursdays Noon – 1:30 in C-Lab

On Thursdays from noon – 1:30PM in the computer lab, drop in for help with any sort of technology issue. This past week we supported a student in need of help with a WORD document, another with Blackboard support and another with a complicated Panopto issue. No matter what your question, please stop by and we will work it through! During other times of the week, seek help from URock staff and Student Helpers.

What About Snow Cancellations?

If URock is cancelling classes due to weather conditions, we will post that information in the following places: on the URock website; on Village Soup; and, on TV channels 6, 8 & 13. In addition, a voice message will be posted on the URock phone line. Class cancellations are (ideally!) made at least 2 hours before the class is due to meet. Sometimes faculty cancel individual classes and, in that case, we call all students. Please check your phones and be sure Maine Street has the best phone number for us to reach you!

Spread the Word – CIS Program Live Fall 2013

Starting in the fall of 2013 students will be able to take all of the required courses for UMA’s Associate of Science in Computer Information Systems at URock. Join one of the most dynamic and growing professional fields in Knox County.  As your advisor for more info.

Get Involved at URock

Research shows that students do academically better, enjoy college more and take away a broader experience when they get involved in school outside of the classroom. There are some good student organizations that could use your help. The Student Association is the local group that sponsors activities using your student activity fees. URock is always looking for its next set of student leaders!

If you expect to be making a lot of photocopies in the spring term, you may want to add money to your copy card.  Check out the instructions here.
