NEWS FROM MAINE SEA GRANT | FALL 2012

EDUCATION HIGHLIGHTS

November 1 is the deadline to apply for Maine Sea Grant’s undergraduate scholarship in marine sciences

Two new graduate students in UMaine’s marine science and marine policy dual-degree program have entered the three-year program as Maine Sea Grant Scholars. Noah Oppenheim of Falmouth, Maine, will be working with Dr. Richard Wahle; and Jocelyn Runnebaum of Lusaka, Zambia, will be working with Dr. Yong Chen and Dr. Teresa Johnson.

EXTENSION HIGHLIGHTS

In June 2012, Maine Sea Grant and partners launched the Downeast Fisheries Trail, 45 sites of current and historic fishing interest in Washington and Hancock counties, Maine. The trail is described on a new map brochure and a website. Three new interpretive panels were installed at Cobscook Bay sites, and additional interpretive information is scheduled for installment this fall at East Machias and Columbia Falls. To learn more about the trail, visit www.DoweastFisheriesTrail.org and find us on Facebook.

On August 30, approximately 100 people from diverse backgrounds attended a workshop titled “The Seaweed Scene” in Belfast, Maine. The meeting brought people together to discuss the ongoing development of the seaweed industry in the state and the region, and to build a network of professionals in different fields. The meeting was attended by seaweed harvesters and processors, scientists, engineers, food processing specialists, regulators and policy professionals, extension personnel, aquaculturists, wastewater treatment specialists, animal feeds experts, and representatives of biofuel and other industry. Meeting notes and presentations are available at http://www.seagrant.umaine.edu/seaweed/seaweed-scene-2012
