URock Welcomes UMS Chancellor and 7 Campus Presidents September 12

On Wednesday, September 12 from 9AM – 2PM, URock will host a meeting of the University’s Chancellor James Page as well as the 7 campus presidents of the University of Maine System. They will be here for a meeting while they experience life at an off-campus center. Thanks for making them feel welcome.

Voter Registration at URock

Staff and faculty will be offering assistance with voter registration in the coming weeks. You will need to present an ID, such as a driver’s license or Maine State ID or Social Security card for photocopying. Part of being a university student is also being an engaged citizen. Watch for voter registration info at URock.

Honors Program Info Meeting – Sept. 20

The Rockland Honors Program will host an info meeting on Thursday, Sept 20 at 5:00PM in room 414. New faculty advisor, Jodi Williams, and URock Honors President, Richard Fortuna, will discuss what the Honors Program entails, a proposed schedule of events for fall and how to become a member. Current members as well as those wanting to learn more are welcome. Please RSVP at the front desk.

URock Fall Colloquia

Several URock faculty and one community volunteer will offer some specialized, short workshops this fall. These are fun and engaging sessions to help us all understand topics of interest and areas of research that our faculty pursue.

Monday, October 1, Noon to 1 pm -  Shannon Kinney, a national social media resource with DreamLocal Digital, will speak on the changes in social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and LinkedIn and how to harness these changes to help build a successful professional presence online.  How is social media changing? How does the world find information now — information about businesses and information about you? What is the distinction between social media for personal use and social media for professional use?  How can you use social media to build a professional identity and find a job?  Kinney will answer these questions and facilitate discussion in a one-hour presentation.

On Wednesday, October 3 from noon to 1:00PM, Associate Professor Christine LeGore will review the book, Mindsets. Author Carol Dweck passionately espouses the importance of believing in a “growth mindset” in teaching and learning. After a brief presentation, we will consider the impact of positive and negative messages on our mindsets and how faculty and students might incorporate Dweck’s insights into our daily practices. People who wish to attend this workshop might benefit from perusing Dweck’s highly informative website. There will be an opportunity to take a related assessment quiz.

Adjunct Professor Kathleen Fox, PhD will present “Culturally-Appropriate Care: What The Youth are Saying” on Thursday, October 18, Noon to 1 pm. This is a discussion of the results of a study of mental health needs among Mohawk young adults of New York State. Findings are that youth prefer their own traditions to current “Evidence Based Treatment”, which they find to be stigmatizing and irrelevant.

An RSVP to the URock front desk for any of the sessions is nice but not necessary.

Tutoring

Do not let your classes get away from you! If you are struggling, check with Dagmar or Deborah about connections for tutoring.

Fall Proctored Test Times

This fall the URock proctored test times will be Tuesday at 8:00AM or Fridays at 4:00PM. You must call the URock office to schedule your test so that we have it ready for you. In some cases you will also need an email permission from your faculty member so please get that ahead of time. Also, remember that a photo ID is required in order for you to take a test.

Farnsworth Passes!

The URock SA buys two passes to the Farnsworth Museum each year. Passes may be checked out at the URock front desk for 24 hours by URock students. Enjoy all the Farnsworth has to offer this summer including Impressionist Summers: Frank W. Benson’s North Haven. Don’t miss it!
