URock Fall Colloquia Kicks Off October 1

Monday, October 1, Noon to 1PM, Shannon Kinney, a national social media resource with DreamLocal Digital, will speak on the changes in social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and LinkedIn and how to harness these changes to help build a successful professional presence online. How is social media changing? How does the world find information now — information about businesses and information about you? What is the distinction between social media for personal use and social media for professional use? How can you use social media to build a professional identity and find a job? Kinney will answer these questions and facilitate discussion in a one-hour presentation.

On Wednesday, October 3 from noon to 1:00PM, Associate Professor Christine LeGore will review the book, Mindsets. Author Carol Dweck passionately espouses the importance of believing in a “growth mindset” in teaching and learning. After a brief presentation, we will consider the impact of positive and negative messages on our mindsets and how faculty and students might incorporate Dweck’s insights into our daily practices. People who wish to attend this workshop might benefit from perusing the highly informative website. There will be an opportunity to take a related assessment quiz.

MHHS Students – Learn about Internships!

Dianne Carrick, Internship Coordinator for students in the MHHS Program, will host a workshop on Monday, October 1 from Noon to 1:00PM. Learn all about placement sites, application processes, requirements and more. Registration at the URock front desk is encouraged but not required.

URock Welcomes Mobile Veterans Van

On Wednesday, October 31, from 10AM to 1:30PM, URock will host the Mobile Veterans’ Van in the Breakwater parking lot. This state of the art mobile van houses expert staff and lots of ways to access veterans’ services. Staff from the VA say the van travels around to help veterans “get the benefits they deserve”. Please stop by and welcome them to Rockland.

Voter Registration at URock

Staff and faculty will be offering assistance with voter registration in the coming weeks. You will need to present an ID, such as a driver’s license or Maine State ID or Social Security card for photocopying. Part of being a university student is also being an engaged citizen. Watch for voter registration info at URock.

Planning to Graduate from UMA in December?

If you think you have met all graduation requirements to receive your diploma in December, you can go to your Student Center in Maine Street, choose the pull down menu listed as “other academic” on the left and choose the link, “Apply for Graduation”. Fall Proctored Test Times

This fall the URock proctored test times will be Tuesday at 8:00AM or Fridays at 4:00PM. You must call the URock office to schedule your test so that we have it ready for you. In some cases you will also need an email permission from your faculty member so please get that ahead of time. Also, remember that a photo ID is required in order for you to take a test.
