Well as far as I know the ability to edit a SID in its native format would have to be done using LizardTech's GeoExpress 8.5. However, if you want compression in an open framework, JPEG2000 achieves results similar to SID without the proprietary licensing. MEGIS uses JP2 exclusively since about 2009 to compress imagery and prepare it for our WMS server. We do 95% of the processing with open-source GDAL tools and Python scripting. ArcGIS is used for a small amount of processing. We can typically generate a series of scripts and run them. They may take 5 days to process (running in background), but only a few hours of actual user time. GDAL is really an amazing suite of open-source tools, if you're not scared of command-line interfaces. You can rescale raster values, reproject, clip, rotate, change formats, compress imagery, generate world files, generate hillshades from DEMs, convert raster to vector and vice-versa, and more. All of that for free and completely scriptable. =============================== Michael Smith State GIS Manager, Maine Office of GIS State of Maine, Office of Information Technology michael.smith _at_ maine.gov 207-215-5530 Board Member, Maine GeoLibrary Board Member, Maine GIS Users Group State Rep, National States Geographic Information Council [cid:image001.png@01CD95A0.0BA76C40][Description: icons] State House Station 174 264 Civic Center Drive Augusta, ME 04333-0174 69o 47' 49.5"W 44o 20' 54.5"N Confidentiality Notice: This email message, including any attachments, is for the sole use of the intended recipients and may contain confidential and privileged information. From: Maine GeoNews [mailto:[log in to unmask]] On Behalf Of Kelly Bellis Sent: Tuesday, September 18, 2012 9:15 AM To: [log in to unmask] Subject: Editing Mr. SID How do you edit images which arrive compressed by Mr. SID? Are you able to batch process a whole mess of Mr. SID images? The workaround I've been using - at least until something better is known - is to open the Mr. SID image in a Global Mapper project (projection defined), export a geotiff with world and prj files, opening the tif in Photoshop and there be able to do just about any type of editing barring a trim / crop, and then save (still in tif format). Of course whatever initial advantage there had been afforded by Lizardtech's unprecedented compression is lost. Thanks for sharing any trade secrets. Kelly -- [cid:image003.gif@01CD95A0.0BA76C40] V.
