NEWS FROM MAINE SEA GRANT SPRING 2012 ------------------------------ *EDUCATION HIGHLIGHTS* Citizen scientists of all ages are in their second year of observing phenology (seasonal life cycle events) for 13 common plants and animals, spanning the marine and terrestrial environments, in their backyards and communities as participants with Signs of the Seasons. Because of this spring’s unusually warm weather, climate scientists and resource managers at the USA National Phenology Network have made a special request for observations of red and sugar maples. To date, Signs of the Seasons volunteers have contributed 1,000 observations, information that will be used to evaluate changes in the timing of sugaring seasons and spring leaf-out across the Northeast.
