NEWS FROM MAINE SEA GRANT
SPRING 2012
EDUCATION HIGHLIGHTS
Citizen
scientists of all ages are in their second year of observing phenology
(seasonal life cycle events) for 13 common plants and animals, spanning
the marine and terrestrial environments, in their backyards and
communities as participants with Signs of the Seasons. Because of this
spring’s unusually warm weather, climate scientists and resource
managers at the USA National Phenology Network have made a special
request for observations of red and sugar maples. To date, Signs of the
Seasons volunteers have contributed 1,000 observations, information that
will be used to evaluate changes in the timing of sugaring seasons and
spring leaf-out across the Northeast. For more information about this
program, or to sign up for a training workshop, please visit: http://umaine.edu/signs-of-the-seasons/
EXTENSION HIGHLIGHTS
New legal research on using tax policies to address working waterfront and coastal access issues has been added to http://www.accessingthemainecoast.com.
Esperanza
Stancioff, a climate educator with the Marine Extension Team, has
received four new grants from NOAA and the National Sea Grant Office for
climate-change related work in Maine and the Northeast. The funding
will support the following projects:
- Providing examples of coastal resilience strategies to local municipal officials in the North Atlantic region.
- Working with fellow MET member Kristen Grant to enhance and expand www.seagrant.umaine.edu/coastal-hazards-guide and related outreach.
- Working
with fellow MET member Kristen Grant and the City of Ellsworth to
develop a community-based adaptation model with a focus on stormwater
and flood protection infrastructure.
- With
fellow MET members Sherman Hoyt and Kristen Grant, working with the
Social and Environmental Research Institute to promote climate change
awareness and adaptive planning in Atlantic fisheries communities.
RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS
Maine Sea Grant would like to thank everyone who participated in the 2012 Maine Sea Grant Research Symposium.
