Expressions Night March 23!

This Friday, March 23 is next round of Expressions Night. Support your fellow students reading original work, singing, dancing, displaying art work and more. The Honors Program is planning a potluck dinner at 5:00PM including lasagna and other treats. Food contributions welcome or do it stress free and just come and enjoy the food provided by members of the Honors Program and the show. Expressions will start at 5:30PM. URock Hours and Proctored Testing Over Spring Break

URock will be open next week Monday through Friday 8:00AM – 5:30PM. Please note that proctored tests will be administered on Tuesdays from 8 – 11AM and on Friday from 1 – 4PM. Remember to call ahead and schedule your testing and bring a photo ID.

Info Session On BA Social Sciences and New Social Media Certificate

Two UMA full-time faculty and friendly faces at URock, Professors James Cook and Charlie Grunder, will host an information session about UMA’s BA in Social Sciences, including the new Social Media Certificate, on Monday, April 9th at noon at URock. Please join us for an informal lunch and chat about program requirements and finding a career. RSVP to the front office is encouraged so we can plan lunch.

Internships and Scholarships in Innovation

Paid internships now available! This program is looking for motivated, innovative Maine college students who want to make a difference in our state while gaining valuable work experience with entrepreneurial companies. Innovate for Maine is an internship program that connects students with companies that want to grow and create jobs in Maine. Summer full-time & part-time internships, as well as fall & spring semester part-time internships available. Deadline for student applications: March 30, 2012.

Financial Aid Posting for 2012 – 2013

Financial aid should be on your Maine Street screens in the next few weeks. You will receive an email from Financial Aid telling you to accept your aid. Please continue to monitor Maine Street so you can accept your aid as soon as it is posted. You will need posted financial aid (or payment) to register for summer classes.

Ready To Graduate?

Are you ready to graduate in May? UMA has posted its graduation information for the May 12th event at the Augusta Civic Center. Click on applying to graduate (You must do this!) and other details about the commencement event on May 12. Also, save the date for Saturday, May 5th at URock at 4:00PM for our local graduation celebration. More details on that will be coming.

Summer and Fall Registration

UMS campuses have either opened summer and fall registration, or returning students can now make wish lists in Maine Street. Course listings are now available for both summer and fall on the URock web site and through the Distance Learning Class Search.

All seven campuses have different registration dates for summer and fall terms. Check the URock site for registration date information.

Please note that UMA registration for returning students will open at 6:00AM on April 9th for the fall semester and at 8:00AM on the 9th for the summer term. Payment or proof of financial aid is needed when you register for summer. Fall does not require payment at this time so you can use .

URock Student Association Elections Coming Soon!

The URock Student Association elections are coming April 16 – 21. Candidates for all officers are needed! Petitions for candidacy are posted on the student lounge bulletin board or available at the front office or from Dagmar.The Student Association develops student events and activities using the activity fees collected from URock students. Joining the SA is a great leadership development activity.

Where is My Returned Course Work?

If you are taking an ITV or videoconference course, your graded course work is available for you to collect at the front office. We do not return course work in the attendance folders. So just stop at the office and ask for it!

Support the March of Dimes Walk-a-Thon

The team, B!G STEPS, little feet, will be participate in the March for Babies Walk starting from the Rockland Elks Lodge on May 6, 2012 and going for 4 miles. We have 14 members and counting, some of whom are fellow students. We are currently looking for sponsors and would be delighted if you would consider making a donation! Donations are accepted through all forms of payment. Checks should be made out to The March of Dimes. Please give checks and cash to the staff at the front desk. We will be having cutouts to purchase for $1.00 as well. The sign-up sheet is posted on the UROCK bulletin board in the student lounge. Thank you for your support!

Honors Program Info

There is a new bookcase over by the Honors Program bulletin board outside room #413. The books are meant to be borrowed, shared, read and passed on. Bring in some of your favorite titles to leave and share also.

The Honors Program has a raffle going on at the front counter to benefit the URock Scholarship Fund. Purchase tickets (50 cents each or 3 for one dollar) to win the Easter Basket with adorable handcrafted items (by Lottie Wincapaw) and other goodies. It will make a great gift for any age! The drawing ends April 2.

Creating the Rest of Your Life: Work, Money & Life After 50

Women, Work and Community staffer, Linda Buckmaster, will offer a 2-session workshop at URock on how to put together the pieces (retirement, savings, security, work, volunteering, health) for the “encore” phase of life. Today’s workers stay in the work force much longer than our predecessors and it is important to plan. The workshop is free and scheduled for Thursdays, April 5 and May 24 from 5:30 – 8:00PM. To register for this free workshop call 596-2615, email Linda Buckmaster or sign up at the URock front desk.

Resources for Teacher Preparation

Cynthia Dean, Assistant Professor of Education at UMA, recently visited URock to share valuable info about the three paths to teacher certification now available at URock: elementary, secondary and special education. More info can be found on UMA’s website. We also suggest you self-enroll in her Blackboard site for the latest tips on student teaching, Praxis exams and Dept of Ed. regulations. Here’s the process: Log into Blackboard, click the Community tab (between Courses and Libraries on the top of the screen), click on the UMA Organizations folder, find the site (UMA Education Pathways), then select Enroll from the pull-down menu in the Organization ID column. Enter the access code (umaed), then Submit.
