Chili Cook Off Friday, February 17

The URock Honors Program will host a Chili Cook Off event at URock on Friday, February 17th starting at 5:00PM. Twelve URock chefs have signed on to compete. Come enjoy the feed and vote for URock’s best chili chef! Chili will be piping hot and ready to share at 5:00PM. Bread and drinks provided by the Honors Program. Families welcome. A minimum donation is encouraged.

URock Hours and Testing During February Vacation

URock will be closed Monday, Feb 20 in observance of Presidents Day. For the rest of the week the building and office will be open from 8:00AM to 5:30PM. Proctored testing will be held on Tuesday from 8 – 11AM and on Friday from 1 – 4:00PM due to vacation hours. Enjoy the break!

You are Invited to UMA’s Leadership Conference March 3

Interested in developing new leadership skills? You are invited to attend the Annual Leadership Conference on the UMA campus Saturday, March 3 from 10AM to 2PM. Stand-up comedian Kelly McFarland and Singing Chef, Birdie Newman Katz will add fun and laughter to the events of the day. Contact Dagmar Moravec if you are interested. Car pooling is available.

Owls Head Transportation Museum Seeks Summer Interns

Join the staff of the Owls Head Transportation Museum for an exciting summer internship position. Four URock interns needed for such tasks as online promotion, media distribution, special event and exhibition set-ups, education programming, front office support, business marketing, and more. Find out more at a free Open House event on Tuesday, March 6th at 5:00PM at the museum. Polish your resume and attend the open house! These internships are available for both college credit and a stipend. Learn About Distance Ed Library Services March 6

On Tuesday, March 6th from 2:30 – 3:30PM, Lisa McDaniels, Distance Education Librarian will offer a workshop in the URock computer lab demonstrating research tools using the distance education library services. Do you know that you have full access to the collections of all the university campuses, the Maine State Library and public libraries in Maine without leaving Rockland? And, better yet, your library books are shipped right to URock free of charge.

This may be the most valuable hour you spend in a long time! Sign up at the URock front desk is encouraged but not necessary.

Asst Prof. Tom Giordano and Dean Brenda McAleer to Visit URock March 13

Assistant Professor of Accounting, Tom Giordano, and Dean Brenda McAleer will visit URock on Tuesday, March 13, to meet and talk with students in the UMA business program. Join us at noon for an informal chat about degree requirements, internships and career opportunities. Even if you are not a business major, but are looking at a certificate in accounting, or a minor in business, you have a lot to gain from meeting these two outstanding educators. Please RSVP to the front office as lunch will be served.

Learn to SKYPE

Although Skype-ing is a free service some students may need some coaching to get going. We have recently posted some Skype instructions under our URock Quick Connects on the home page. Remember that URock room #409 is equipped with Skype and camera and available for student’s use.

Women’s Leadership Conference This Summer

This highly acclaimed residential training program provides public leadership education for college women. It will be held on the Univ of Maine at Orono campus from June 1 to June 6 and is designed to educate, empower and encourage participants to take on leadership roles. Apply Now for 2012- 2013 Financial Aid

Reapply now for financial aid for Summer & Fall 2012 and Spring 2013. We advise that you prepare your 2011 federal income taxes and then file your FAFSA for the 2012-2013 academic year just as early as you can. The earlier you apply, the more money you may be awarded!

Storm Cancellations

If bad weather forces us to cancel classes, you will find the most up-to-date information on the URock web site as well as on TV channels 6, 8 and 13 plus Village Soup online. You can also call the URock office for an updated recorded message. Generally, classes are canceled two hours before start times.

URock Student Association

The Board of the URock Student Association is always looking for new members to help with the planning and sponsoring of activities and events to build the URock community. This is a great way to make new friends and offer your leadership skills. Check the web site for contact information and links to the SA’s meeting minutes. Check the front counter for SA drawings where you can win!!
