We also offer on our data catalog a shapefile, which is an index to the
topo maps and indicates the date (year) for the map published.

Yes the USGS maps will have slight shifts between them due to the fact
that they had to be manually georeferenced.

Furthermore, even maps where the alignment between one layer (such as
roads) is high, another layer (such as contours) may be low due to the
fact that those old maps were printed one color at a time using (I
believe) engraved metal plates. The plates did not always line up
exactly between printings.

Hey, thanks Dan.

I knew they existed off the MeGIS site and have been available from UNH
for quite some time as I've gone there several times over the years.
Mostly I was curious if the individual map's publication date could be
had without going there (or to the USGS site).

For any other users on this list that use historic quads, the USGS site
may have in some cases several copies of the same addition map for you
to choose from and that the geo-referenced pdf is equally serviceable
and easily read into the application (in my case, Global Mapper), though
note a minimal shift in position between each of them.

Below are examples (sorry for the overly compressed jpgs) of the MeGIS
WMS version, and three USGS geo-referenced pdfs all of the exact same
area (circa 1911) and with other data layers visible for positional
referencing.

The historic quads are a fantastic WMS addition - hats off,
kudos and many thanks! Well done.

I may have missed something; however, where can we view the
unclipped versions as the map collars contain other information which
pertains to each individual 15' quad and the presented metadata
<http://geolibportal.usm.maine.edu/geonetwork/srv/en/metadata.show?id=94
