Closed for Veterans’ Day

URock is closed and there are no classes on Friday, November 11th in honor of Veterans’ Day.

Change in Make-Up Tests This Week Only

As a result of the Veterans’ Day holiday, there will be no Friday make-up tests. Instead, make-ups will be held on Thursday at 4:00PM. Remember to sign up to take a test and bring your photo ID.

Spring Semester Registration is Open!

Self service registration is underway! Check the spring 2012 semester page on the URock site for the most up to date registration information, including campus calendars, links to the Distance Learning Class Search and ways to put courses on your wish list from all UMS campuses. Advising appointments with Beverly Bayer and Deborah Meehan are available by calling the URock front office at 596-6906.

New Onsite Courses in Rockland for Spring 2012!

Teresa Mayo will teach a new upper level course at URock this spring, PSY/JUS 489, Forensic Psychology on Thursdays at 4:00PM. Topics include determining competency and insanity, witness and expert testimony, the social psychology of the courtroom and the credibility of witnesses, victims and offenders. This is a great upper level elective.

Jonathan Potter has developed a new 300-level drama course for URock in the spring term. DRA 389, “Introduction to Traditional Comedy” will be taught on Mondays at 7:00PM. This new performance course will introduce students to the history, theory and practice of commedia dell’ arte, characterized by masks, music, dance and witty dialogue.

Mark Goodridge, CIS faculty member, will teach CIS 135 Introduction to Information Systems and Application Development for the first time as an onsite in Rockland on Thirsdays at 4:00PM. Students will develop a small office application such as a database or spreadsheet and integrate web technology.

Bill Halpin will teach PHI 370, East Asian Philosophy on Wednesdays at 7:00PM as an onsite for the first time in Rockland. This course examines the major philosophical traditions of China and Japan and will help students develop important critical thinking skills!

Will Galloway will teach HTY 360, History of International Relations, on Wednesdays at 4:00PM. This is a first time offering in Rockland. Examining the dynamics of super power rivalry, this course will look at international cooperation in an era of globalization.

Full-time assistant professor of sociology, James Cook will teach SOC 201, Social Problems at URock on Mondays at 4:00PM. It’s been a long time since this course was taught at URock! This course looks at contemporary problems in American society! Take advantage of this one live!

If bad weather forces us to cancel classes, you will find the most up to date information on the URock web site as well as on TV channels 6, 8 and 13 plus Village Soup online. You can also call the URock office for an updated recorded message. Generally, classes are canceled two hours before their start times.

Expressions Night Coming Nov 18th

URock’s next Expressions Night is set for Friday, November 18th. Frank Pavalkis will be pulling this event together on behalf of URock’s Honors Program. Email Frank for more info about how to express yourself at this event!

Financial Aid Reminders

Please remember to adjust your enrollment in Maine Street if you are changing the number of credit hours from what was expected of you for the spring term. Also for those of you who filed a SAP appeal for fall, remember that you are under contract with financial aid to meet certain academic standards. If you will not meet those, there is yet another appeal process but you must demonstrate extraordinary circumstances.

URock Student Association – Learn All About It!

The Board of the URock Student Association is always looking for new members to help with the planning and sponsoring of activities and events to build the URock community. This is a great way to make new friends and offer your leadership skills. The next meeting will be Wednesday, November 16th at 1:00PM. Check the web site for contact information and links to the SA’s meeting minutes.

Equipped with a flat screen monitor, computer, wireless keyboard, Skype, white boards and comfy furniture, the room can be configured to meet your needs.
