Closed Columbus Day

URock is closed Monday, October 10, Columbus Day. We will be open on Tuesday the 11th from 8:00AM until 5:30PM. Remember, there are no classes on these days.

“You and Your Money” – Lunch Hour Workshop Series – This Week!

We all need help managing our personal finances, right? Linda Buckmaster of Women, Work and Community will host two free workshops in October during the noon hour. On Wednesday, October 5 from 12:00 noon to 1:00PM, Linda will present, “How Much Should I Borrow”, a discussion about student loans. On Wednesday, October 12, from 12:00 noon to 1:00PM Linda will present “Reduce Your Debt and Be Happy”, about basic strategies for reducing your debt over time. Attend one or both of these for great advice!

Session on Information & Library Services Program – October 27th

Jodi Williams, full-time UMA faculty member in the AS and BS in Information and Library Services, will be at URock on Thursday, October 27th at noon to provide an overview of the program, jobs and the career outlook for this field. If there’s a word that best describes UMA’s unique Information and Library Services program, it’s “flexibility.” Even if you have never thought of this career field (with great potential) before, come and learn more about it. You might be surprised.

Mobile Veterans’ Van Rolling Into URock October 26th

Maine’s Mobile Vet Van will visit URock’s Rte #1 parking lot on Wednesday, October 26 from 10AM to 1PM. Meet UMA veterans’ coordinator Amy Line as well as staff of the mobile van who are skilled at answering all sorts of veteran questions.

Tutoring Help!

There is free tutoring available in math and science (biology and A & P). It’s best to jump on any problems early in the semester. Please contact the front office for instructions on getting the process started.

Fall Semester Make-Up Testing

Make-up exams are administered at URock only on Tuesday mornings at 8:00AM and Fridays at 4:00PM. You must call the URock office to schedule your test and you must bring a photo ID.

Pop!Tech at URock!

URock will dedicate classroom #405 on Thursday and Friday, October 20 and 21 for live videostreaming of the presentations from Pop!Tech. This year’s theme is “The World Rebalancing”. As always, Pop!Tech will bring together eminent and emerging leaders, innovators and change agents in business, science, technology, social innovation, entrepreneurship, education and the arts for a conversation on these themes like no other!  Stop in anytime throughout those days and enjoy these amazing presentations along with some drinks and popcorn from the URock SA.

Geek2Geek Newsletter Available

The fall edition of Geek2Geek authored by the UMA Computer Info Systems faculty is now available.

The date for URock’s next Expressions Night is set for Friday, November 18th. Frank Pavalkis will be pulling this event together on behalf of URock’s Honors Program. Email him for more info.

Are you An Elementary Education Student?

UMA and UMPI have a wonderful collaborative arrangement to deliver full teacher certification at the elementary level (K – 8). Students enroll in UMA’s Bachelor in Liberal Studies and declare a minor in Elementary Education. UMPI delivers all of the education course work, including supervision of the student teaching (15 credit hour) experience. UMPI has released some updated information for this program. Please see this new information online particularly as it applies to the requirements and application for student teaching.

Please note that UMM will offer 3 – one credit courses in the spring to help prepare for the Praxis exams in reading, writing and math. Watch for more info!

Room #409 for Studying, Creating, Skype, Practicing Powerpoints and more!

The classroom set-up in room #409 is intended to be a friendly environment for students who are working on projects together. Equipped with a flat screen monitor, computer, wireless keyboard, Skype, white boards and comfy furniture, the room can be configured to meet your needs. Students can schedule use of room #409 themselves through this link.

Bus Trip to Boston

Visit the Science Museum, the Aquarium and the Quincy Market! The bus leaves UMA at 7:00AM on Friday, October 28th. The cost is $15 per registered student and $40 for a student’s guest. Money must be presented at the time of registration to the URock front desk. Seating is extremely limited so act fast!

Prose, Poetry, Art Work, Photography:  Time to Submit to the UMA Scholar!

You are invited to submit papers or artwork for publication in the UMA Scholar. Works do not have to conform to a theme and they do not have to be recent works. Submission deadline is December 31, 2011. Check URock’s bulletin boards for “golden” submission guidelines or email Amy Cyr, managing editor, at [log in to unmask]. The UMA Scholar is sponsored by UMA’s Honors Program.

URock Student Association – Learn All About It!

The Board of the URock Student Association is always looking for new members to help with the planning and sponsoring of activities and events to build the URock community. This is a great way to make new friends and offer your leadership skills. The next meeting will be Wednesday, October 12th at 1:00PM. Check the web site for contact information and links to the SA’s meeting minutes.

Academic Advising

It is a busy time of year and URock is looking at more growth! If you cannot make an advising appointment that you have scheduled please call the office. It may be possible to switch the appointment to a phone appointment and get your questions answered, rather than to reschedule. There are many tricks to being successful academically. Check this link for more great tips and hints and answers to lots of basic questions.

NO Smoking Within 100 Feet of Breakwater

Please adhere to the policy of no smoking within 100 feet of the entrances to the Breakwater Building. Take advantage of the two new picnic tables on the waterfront and move away from the building when smoking. Thanks for your cooperation.
