*Learn Distance Library Skills – This Thursday at Noon!*

Thursday, September 22, Lisa McDaniels will provide a short workshop in the
computer lab from noon until 1:00PM on how to use the distance education
library services. These skills can save you much heartache later! The
workshop is free and open to anyone. Please register at the front office or
just come!

*Prepare for Your Internship in Mental Health & Human Services!!*

All associate and baccalaureate students in MHHS have a “practicum” or
“internship” experience required in the program. On Wednesday, September
28th from noon to 1:00PM, Diane Carrick, Internship Coordinator for UMA’s
MHHS Program, will run a workshop from noon to 1:00PM about requirements,
finding a placement and lots more good advice to help you craft a successful
experience. This is an informal and informative session. Even if you are not
ready for your internship next spring, come and learn how the process works!

*Make-Up Testing*

Make-up exams are administered at URock *only* on Tuesday mornings at 8:00AM
and Fridays at 4:00PM. You must call the URock office to schedule your test
and you must bring a photo ID.

*Are you An Elementary Education Student?*

UMA and UMPI have a wonderful collaborative arrangement to deliver full
teacher certification at the elementary level (K – 8). Students enroll in
UMA’s Bachelor in Liberal Studies and declare a minor in Elementary
Education. UMPI delivers all of the education course work, including
supervision of the student teaching (15 credit hour) experience. UMPI has
released some updated information for this program. Please see this new

as it applies to the requirements and application for student
teaching.

*Room #409 for Studying, Creating, Skype, Practicing Powerpoints and more!*

The classroom set-up in room #409 is intended to be a friendly environment
for students who are working on projects together. Equipped with a flat
screen monitor, computer, wireless keyboard, Skype, white boards and comfy
furniture, the room can be configured to meet your needs. Students can
schedule use of room #409 through the front office. Enjoy!

*College Success Workshops*

In your Blackboard Site you will see a link at the top to “COURSES”. Click
there to see a series of College Success Workshops in Note-Taking, Time
Management, Test Taking and other important topics to help you succeed.
These short online workshops are well worth your time!

*Tutoring Help!*

There is free tutoring available in math and science (biology and A & P).
It’s best to jump on any problems early in the semester. Please contact the
front office for instructions on getting the process started.

*Mobile Veterans’ Van Visits URock October 26th*

Maine’s Mobile Vet Van will visit URock’s Rte #1 parking lot on Wednesday,
October 26 from 10AM to 1PM. Meet UMA veterans’ coordinator Amy Line as well
as staff of the mobile van who are skilled at answering all sorts of veteran
questions.

*Bus Trip to Boston*

Visit the Science Museum, the Aquarium and the Quincy Market! The bus leaves
UMA at 7:00AM on Friday, October 28th. The cost is $15 per registered
student and $40 for a student’s guest. Money must be presented at the time
of registration to the URock front desk. Seating is extremely limited so act
fast!

*Student Parking*

Please enter and exit URock from Fales Street, the little side street just
north of our building. Student parking is behind the Breakwater Building,
preferably in the gravel! This separates our chaos from the other tenants at
Breakwater.

*Join the URock Student Association*

The Board of the URock Student

always looking for new members to help with the planning and
sponsoring
of activities and events to build the URock community. This is a great way
to make new friends and offer your leadership skills. Check out the minutes

*You and Your Money – Lunch Hour Workshop Series*

We all need help managing our personal finances, right? Linda Buckmaster of
Women, Work and Community will host two free workshops in October during the
noon hour. On Wednesday, October 5 from 12:00 noon to 1:00PM, Linda will
present, *“How Much Should I Borrow”*, a discussion about student loans. On
Wednesday, October 12, from 12:00 noon to 1:00PM Linda will present *“Reduce
Your Debt and Be Happy”*, about basic strategies for reducing your debt over
time. Attend one or both of these for great advice!

*UMA Releases New Program Check Sheets for Fall 2011 Admits*

UMA has just released i8ts new academic program check sheets for Fall 2011.
If you are admitted to a program, or have processed a change of program
effective Fall 2011, these are the check sheets to follow! If you were
admitted for a different term, still follow the right check sheet for that
previous semester.

*Academic Advising*

It is a busy time of year and URock is looking at more growth! *If you
cannot make an advising appointment that you have scheduled* please call the
office. It may be possible to switch the appointment to a phone appointment
and get your questions answered, rather than to reschedule. There are many
tricks to being successful academically. Check this

*NO Smoking Within 100 Feet of Breakwater*

Please adhere to the policy of no smoking within 100 feet of the entrances
to the Breakwater Building. Take advantage of the two new picnic tables on
the waterfront and move away from the building when smoking. Thanks for your
cooperation.

*Be Wise & Lock Your Car*

Although URock and its surrounding areas are safe environments, there is an
increase of reported property thefts in the mid-coast. Therefore, we advise
that you lock your cars in the parking lot for added safety.

*WWC Programming: Introduction to Self Employment*

On Thursday, August 18th from 10AM – 12 noon, Women, Work &
Community<http://www.womenworkandcommunity.org/>will host an
introductory workshop for those deciding whether
self-employment is the right choice. The class covers the pros and cons of
owning your own business, the major elements of a business plan, and the
many resources available to help you succeed. The workshop is free and will
be held on the 2nd floor at the Career Center. Call WWC at 596-2616 to
register.
