*Newsletter – August 24*

*Textbooks Are Here!*

If you ordered your textbooks through the UMA bookstore and asked for them
to be delivered to URock, they will be available for pick up on Thursday,
the 25th. We are open 8:00 – 5:30 on 8/25 and 8:00 – 4:00PM on 8/26 and then
regular hours next week.

*Ice Cream the First Week of School*

Members of the URock Student Association will be scooping ice cream and
stocking the ice cream freezer in the student lounge for the first week of
school.  Stop and meet them!

*Student Parking*

Please enter and exit URock from Fales Street, the little side street just
north of our building. Student parking is behind the Breakwater Building.
This separates our chaos from the other tenants at Breakwater. There is an
entrance labeled UC Rockland at the rear of the building.

*Enjoy Our Picnic Tables*

This summer URock installed 2 picnic tables across the parking lot along the
shoreline. Enjoy this beautiful spot for studying, quiet time and visiting
with friends!

*Join the URock Student Association*

The Board of the URock Student
Association<http://learn.maine.edu/rockland/about-us/student-association/>is
always looking for new members to help with the planning and
sponsoring
of activities and events to build the URock community. This is a great way
to make new friends and offer your leadership skills. Check out the minutes
of their last meeting
<http://learn.maine.edu/rockland/files/2011/08/Meeting-Minutes-SA-2001-revise.pdf>and
stop by at their next meeting the second week in September.

*You and Your Money – Lunch Hour Workshop Series*

We all need help managing our personal finances, right? Linda Buckmaster of
Women, Work and Community will host two free workshops in October during the
noon hour. On Wednesday, October 5 from 12:00 noon to 1:00PM, Linda will
present, *“How Much Should I Borrow”*, a discussion about student loans. On
Wednesday, October 12, from 12:00 noon to 1:00PM Linda will present *“Reduce
Your Debt and Be Happy”*, about basic strategies for reducing your debt over
time. Attend one or both of these for great advice!

*Prepare for Your Internship for MHHS for Spring Term*

All associate and baccalaureate students in MHHS have a “practicum” or
“internship” experience required in the program. On Wednesday, September
28th from noon to 1:00PM, Diane Carrick, Internship Coordinator for UMA’s
MHHS Program, will run a workshop from noon to 1:00PM about requirements,
finding a placement and lots more good advice to help you craft a successful
experience. This is an informal and informative session. Please register
with the URock front desk.

*Beware of Add-Drop Dates*

You may still sign up for fall classes but now payment or proof of financial
aid is due at the time of registration. Also, please check about add-drop
dates before making a schedule change to be sure there is no financial
penalty.

*Match Your Student Enrollment to Your Financial Aid*

Your enrolled credit hours must match your financial aid package or your aid
will not transfer over to your student account. So, if financial aid expects
you to be a full-time student then you need to be registered full-time. If
you need to make a change, go to the “student enrollment” link in Maine
Street on your financial aid screen. Need help? Call the URock front office.

*Taking an Online Class? Start Here: Steps to Successful Online Learning*

If you are taking your first online class this fall, please go to our new
website page <http://learn.maine.edu/get-started/steps/> for great tips and
strategies to be successful. These helpful hints will make the semester
start up much smoother.

*Academic Advising*

It is a busy time of year and URock is looking at more growth! *If you
cannot make an advising appointment that you have scheduled* please call the
office. It may be possible to switch the appointment to a phone appointment
and get your questions answered, rather than to reschedule. There are many
tricks to being successful academically. Check this
link<http://www.uma.edu/academicadvisingfaqs.html#homework>for more
great tips and hints and answers to lots of basic questions.

*Lots of Options in URock’s Room #409*

With new colors, new furniture, a dedicated computer with wireless keyboard
and Skype, URock’s room #409 has lots of new uses. It’s a great space for
study groups, tutoring, Skyping with other students across the state, or
preparing a Powerpoint in large scale format. The room may be reserved using
Google calendar.

*UMA Announces Convocation Theme*

This year’s keynote speaker at UMA’s Convocation event will be Winona
LaDuke, an internationally renowned activist working on sustainable
development and environmental justice. Ms. LaDuke is featured in the book,
“Talking About a Revolution”. This book has been chosen by the Colloquium
Committee as the work to be integrated into UMA’s curriculum this year.
Convocation will be held on the UMA campus on Friday, September 23 from 2:30
– 4:00pm.

*NO Smoking Within 100 Feet*

Please adhere to the policy of no smoking within 100 feet of the entrances
to the Breakwater Building. Take advantage of the two new picnic tables on
the waterfront and move away from the building when smoking. Thanks for your
cooperation.

*Be Wise & Lock Your Car*

Although URock and its surrounding areas are safe environments, there is an
increase of reported property thefts in the mid-coast. Therefore, we advise
that you lock your cars in the parking lot for added safety.

*WWC Programming: Introduction to Self Employment*

On Thursday, August 18th from 10AM – 12 noon, Women, Work &
Community<http://www.womenworkandcommunity.org/>will host an
introductory workshop for those deciding whether
self-employment is the right choice. The class covers the pros and cons of
owning your own business, the major elements of a business plan, and the
many resources available to help you succeed. The workshop is free and will
be held on the 2nd floor at the Career Center. Call WWC at 596-2616 to
register.

*Bulletin Board for Internships and Job Openings*

The bulletin board across from the URock front office has up to date
listings of companies looking for interns as well as those seeking part-time
and full-time employees. We try to keep the listings current so keep
checking for new material.
