I’m a firm believer that GIS is for
everyone, and it’s only too technical if you deliver it in a fashion which is
too technical. That’s said…why not distribute WMS services as layer files? As
long as the URL for the WMS doesn’t change, the layer file will always point to
it. Just a thought…

Barb is right - however we are also
developing a web application which will replace the current MEGIS orthoviewer,
and will consume any service that we have in WMS.
Also if you have staff regularly using
simple apps like Google Earth keep in mind that it can consume WMS as
well. The directions are right on the WMS web site.

A WMS is not a web application that you
can see in a web browser. You have to add it as a service to a GIS
software application. I think it’s a bit more technical than anybody in
this office will want to do.

Barb,
We should probably have a little
demonstration for people on how the web mapping service works. I would
guess others besides planning might like to use it occasionally.

The
Maine Office of GIS and the GeoLibrary Board provide imagery web mapping
services (WMS) for public consumption. This is a great way to get imagery
into your map without having to keep copies of the imagery at your site.
For more details see http://www.maine.gov/geolib/wms.htm.
We
have recently added six-inch color orthophotos (dated April 11 2006) for
Hampden to the collection.
