By that time Lewis had (by his own later reckoning) given up his earlier 
ideas of vortextual painting for portraiture (paid the bills as well,) but 
to me there's a homage to the Vortex in the chiseled presentation.  The 
painting behind Pound is indicative of the beautiful paintings that Lewis 
did at the end during his Toronto and post Toronto years which are his most 
outstanding. (But later and second painting of Eliot done with near 
blindness is cool too.
