Prospective student-athletes usually give a verbal committment to stem the
tide of phone calls, emails, etc. they receive from coaches who are
recruiting them.

Coaches usually try to get verbal committments early so they can plan their
recruiting for later in the year, knowing that they can look to fill other
holes if they get a committment from a player they really wanted.

Schools CANNOT announce verbal committments as it would constitute a
secondary violation with the NCAA. However, these committments are often
leaked so the media can get hold of the information.
