For more than a year, we have been sending mail to everyone who connects to the old POP server on the mainframe asking them to change their e-mail config to point to the new mail server. These messages have been ignored by a large number of people even though they receive them every week. As most of you know, we installed a new mail server almost 2 years ago and 18 months ago we moved the bulk of e-mail usage to this new mail server. When we did this, we set up tunnels from the mainframe so that those who connected to the old mainframe server would be connected transparently over to the new server. We are planning on removing the POP server from the mainframe this summer and to that end, we are expiring the tunnels. All tunnels that have not been used in 60 days have been removed. New userids are not set up with tunnels. We are also planning on changing the text of the mail sent to users connecting to maine.edu to the following as of monday June 4th. If you have concerns, please contact us before then. We expect that despite the deadline, more than a year notice and stronger language in the mail, that many will still ignore this message and when the tunnels are turned off they will call for help. By the way, if you have cluster authorization processes that use the mainframe pop server for authentication (you shouldn't) you will need to change them. Subject: WITH YOUR CURRENT SETUP, YOUR E-MAIL WILL STOP WORKING AS OF JULY 4TH! Detailed instructions are at http://www.maine.edu/mailserver.html We are sending you this mail because you connect to a mail server which is being removed this summer. We have been sending these messages to those who connect to this old mail server for more than a year now. We have moved your mail to the new server and in doing so we have arranged things so that the move was entirely transparent to you. In other words, you should not have noticed. One of the things we did to accomplish this is that when you connect to the OLD e-mail server, it makes a connection to the new e-mail server for you. AS OF JULY 4TH IT WILL NO LONGER DO THIS FOR YOU. The new e-mail server name is mail.maine.edu. The old one you have been using would have been one of maine.edu, maine.maine.edu or mail.caps.maine.edu. In your e-mail programs this may be called the "mail host", "incoming mail server", "POP3 server" or something similar. Change this entry in your e-mail program to point to the new e-mail server: mail.maine.edu You should also change your outgoing mail server to mail.maine.edu if your outgoing mail server is currently maine.edu or maine.maine.edu. Please note, this DOES NOT CHANGE YOUR E-MAIL ADDRESS. It remains [log in to unmask] (maine.maine.edu and mail.caps.maine.edu will also work, but maine.edu is preferred). Please DO NOT use [log in to unmask] as your e-mail address. If you need assistance in adjusting your e-mail client, please feel free to contact our support staff at [log in to unmask], or by phone at 581-3524.
