As I'm sure you are all aware, there is yet another pair off outlook and
outlook express carried viruses spreading rapidly across the network.
Althoug we have reccomended people not run outlook and not open
attachements, these things continue.

We have been investigating adding a virus scanner to our mail servers at
UNET to combat this problem. We have not finished our evaluation, but
because of the current problems, we are going to try to put one into
service this morning. Since this will have perceptable effects on
mail, a note to the people on this list is appropriate.

   1. Due to mail being rerouted through the virus software, there will
likely be additional delays of a minute or two in mail delivery.
   2. If a virus is detected, it is removed from the mail and both the
      sender and recipient are notified.
   3. Initially only mail coming into the UMS mail server
(mail.maine.edu) addressed to @maine.edu userids from other
servers will be scanned, mail relayed through mail.maine.edu is
not scanned (we have not had time enough to test this part yet).
   4. For those interested, the particular combination we are using at
the moment are Mailscanner with Sophos as the virus engine. We
are not using the spam tagging functions of mailscanner at this
time. This may or may not be the software we eventually use after
      we finish our evaluation.

We will keep you updated if there are further changes.
