Jean Fritz has written a number of wonderful books, some for older kids, and some appropriate for 8 year-olds, such as the biographical set in which each title is a question: Why Don't You Get a Horse, Sam Adams? What's the Big Idea, Ben Franklin? etc.
The "If You....." series are also among the favorites of the early historians at my school: If You Lived at the Time of the Civil War; If You Grew Up with Abe Lincoln, etc.
Among historical fiction favorites are the My America (for younger readers) and the Dear America series by Scholastic.
Picture biographies, in general, appeal to this crowd; and there are many good ones out there, now.
