With people getting DNA tests results from holiday gifts and long winter evenings ahead, it's genealogy season! Learn how to help your patrons start their research off well with the new series of Zoom programs Genealogy for Librarians from the Maine State Library and the genealogy interest group of the Maine Library Association.
Genealogy questions continue to be a large part of adult reference services; this series is designed for those who have little or no experience answering genealogy questions.
Each individual session will start at 5 p.m. on Thursdays and be a 45 minute presentation, plus time for questions. The presentations will be recorded for those who can't make the scheduled time.
We'll start with the absolute basics ~ no experience necessary. While the series will focus on resources for assisting patrons, if you are interested in your own family history ~ feel free to join in as well!
The series will run from January 6 to March 10, covering:
* January 6: the absolute basics
* January 13: a few more basics
* January 20: branching out from Ancestry
* January 27: finding obituaries and other newspaper treasures
* February 3 and 10: the questions B.J. gets asked the most often (with the answers, too!)
* February 17, 24, March 3, 10: DNA for genealogy: what librarians should know
