Near Andersonville: Winslow Homer’s Civil War

American painter Winslow Homer first rose to national attention for his 
images documenting the Civil War. Dr. Peter Wood’s provocative lecture 
offers a fresh vantage point on Homer, the struggle to end slavery, and the 
dramatic closing years of the Civil War. This program is held in conjunction 
with the exhibition, Winslow Homer’s Civil War—part of the Maine Civil War 
Trail—on view September 8 through December 7, 2013 at the PMA.

A National Book Award nominee and winner of the Beveridge Prize of the 
American Historical Association, Dr. Peter Wood is Professor Emeritus in 
History at Duke University. He has held fellowships from the John Simon 
Guggenheim Memorial Foundation and the National Endowment for the 
Humanities. He is the author of Near Andersonville: Winslow Homer’s Civil 
War, published by Harvard University Press. A book signing will follow the 
lecture.
