I have had several emails about these two online programs.  Questions
like-- what is expected, when does it begin, and how many CE hours will
I get.   To save time I am sending just this one email rather than to
each individual that had a question.  I have highlighted these in yellow
for your convenience.

In the spring, the district consultants will launch two online learning
opportunities using our online classroom via Adobe Connect.  The first
program is aimed at librarians in any type of library who have (or want
to have) supervisory responsibilities.  The second program is all about
school library advocacy and is for school library media specialists and
library ed techs.

 

Each week, there will be an assigned reading from the required text.
The chapters are fairly short so it shouldn't be difficult to get the
reading done and prepare for the discussion each week.  Then, once a
week, for one hour, participants will gather in the online space to
discuss the reading and activities in that chapter.  Those who
successfully complete the program will receive contact hours.

 

In order to participate you will need one of the books below, a computer
with a camera, a built in microphone OR a headset you can plug into your
computer.  Some stipends are available to defray the cost of materials.

Program 1:  Be a Great Boss (30 contact hours)  Starts January 30th

 

 

Did you wake up one morning to find that you are now the boss-either by
design or accident?  Suddenly you realize that being the boss isn't as
fun as you thought it would be.  Maybe the staff is supportive but, you
feel like there is so much more you could do to develop your team and
you're drowning in the details. Or, maybe your staff doesn't treat you
with respect, you feel ineffective at managing your people, or some of
the staff is downright hostile! How do you turn the situation around? By
being the best boss you can be! This program is a working guide to the
key issues and realities that all bosses need to know.  Topics include:
attitude, success with stakeholders, staffing, communication, customer
service, planning, friends and allies, training, funding, people,
leadership and your future in the profession.

Program 2:  Being Indispensable: A School Librarian's Guide to Becoming
an Invaluable Leader (25 contact hours) Starts January 30th

 

Without a proactive approach demonstrating the vital role school
libraries play in learning, school librarians run the risk of becoming
an endangered species. The text and discussions will help empower school
librarians to demonstrate to their stakeholders the value they bring to
the table.

 

Participants will come away from this program:

     * Understanding what other stakeholders in a school need and want

     * Will be able to demonstrate their importance to administrators,
teachers, and parents

     * Will become more adept using essential tools like advocacy and
marketing
