This recommendation is mainly for libraries within a reasonable distance of
the Maine coast, especially southern and mid-coast. We hosted Marine
Mammals of Maine, represented by a knowledgeable volunteer named Jessica
Woodend talking about their work rescuing marine mammals and the occasional
sea turtle. Very informative about Maine marine mammals, native and
seasonal, and amusing about some of the interactions between humans and sea
critters (the basic rule is the same as for land critters: when in doubt,
leave 'em alone and call an expert).
We're in China, about 30 miles inland from Belfast, and Jessica seemed
happy to come. MMoME covers about half the coast; the northern half is
served from the College of the Atlantic, she said. We were charged $50
and Jessica stayed to answer questions after her well-illustrated
presentation.
