It's wonderful news that the Maine State Library was awarded the BTOP
grant so libraries throughout the state can provide an information "commons"
through a broadband connection. As part of this grant, libraries need to be
prepared to provide information on finding jobs and providing information on
the law, health issues and E-Government resources.
If your library is going to be a part of this grant--or even if it
isn't--you are invited to send staff to the Access to Justice Workshops that
start next week. Librarians have always been a little leery of providing
legal information, since it seems too easy to split from giving information
to giving advice.
The Workshop on providing legal information through libraries will be
given in four geographic locations. The workshop runs from 10 to 2 at all
locations.
July 15 at the Bangor Public Library
July 22 at the Portland Public Library
Aug 12 at the Lewiston Public Library
Aug 19 at the Public Library in Presque Isle
Librarians from any type of Library may attend. The workshops are
free, but lunch is $8. Please sign up on the State Library Calendar.

This training is a cooperative effort of the Maine Regional Library
System, The Maine Court System, the Volunteer Lawyers Project and Pine Tree
Legal Assistance.
