New Century Grant Applications went out yesterday in large brown envelopes,
by first-class mail to all Maine Public Libraries. A white label on the
front of the envelopes indicates New Century Grant material and states the
return deadline of January 24, 2002.
Other libraries may participate as partners in a grant application but the
primary applicant has to be a public library by state law. This is a fine
opportunity for teaming!
For the benefit of those not receiving a mailing, we have $197,896 in New
Century Grant funding for this year. This reflects the 2% state-mandated
budget cut. The Bangor and Portland Public Libraries ARRCS will receive
$20,000 each, and each of the three regional library districts will receive
$8,000. It will be up to each regional Executive Board to decide how to
handle the district funds.
We have $133,896 for individual library grants. (Remember a public library
may submit a grant that includes a number of public and/or school, academic
or special libraries, or collaboration with other cultural agencies.)
Though the Library Commission decided there was not enough money to sponsor
construction projects this year, public libraries may apply for space
planning or pre-construction consultation.
Please call or e-mail if you have any questions. A grant writing workshop
will be set up as soon as possible and will be announced on this list. Best
wishes and happy Thanksgiving. Linda
