The Holocaust Human Rights Center of Maine seeks nominations for the
following awards:
The "Outstanding Student of the Year Award" recognizes Maine students who
have written an extraordinarily effective nonfiction essay or literary work,
or who has created an unusually expressive piece of visual or performance
art relating to the Holocaust and/or issues of human rights.  The Lawrence
Alan Spiegel Remembrance Fund sponsors the HHRC's annual Outstanding Student
of the Year Awards. For nomination forms and guidelines, contact Liz Dailey,

Deadline is May 10th.
The "Take A Stand Award" recognizes a Maine citizen of any age who, at
considerable personal risk, takes a public stand against a situation,
person, or action in which another person's rights or personal integrity are
being denied.  For nomination forms and guidelines, contact Sharon Nichols,

is March 31.
The "Holocaust Educator of the Year Award" recognizes a Maine educator who
has been especially innovative in furthering education about the Holocaust
and/or issues of human rights.  For nomination forms and guidelines, contact

Applications Deadline for Fourth Mission to Poland

The deadline for the Fourth Mission to Poland is January 31, 2002.  The 14
day study tour for Maine educators, sponsored by the Holocaust Human Rights
Center of Maine, is scheduled for July 10-23, 2002.  The trip is open to
Maine educators of all grade levels, as well as graduate and undergraduate
college students seeking greater understanding about the implementation and
consequences of the Nazi conceived "final solution" during World War II.
Highlights of the trip include a walking tour of the medieval streets of
old Krakow and its Kazimierz (the old Jewish quarter), meetings with Polish
teachers, who are developing methodology on teaching about the Holocaust,
and visits to Schindler's factory, Plaszow Labor Camp, and the Warsaw
ghetto.  The death camps of Auschwitz, Majdanek, and Treblinka will also be
visited.
The cost is $2,600.  Continuing Education Units and Inservice Graduate
Credits are available at extra cost.  Scholarships are available to Maine

Approaching Deadline for Scholarship Applications

Applications for the John Mizner Memorial Scholarship and the Lawrence Alan
Spiegel Remembrance Scholarship are due by March 31.  Any college bound
senior or home schooler who resides in Maine may apply.
The John Mizner Memorial Scholarship is in memory of John Mizner, a
Holocaust survivor, who served as a director of the Holocaust Human Rights
Center of Maine since 1993 until his death in 1998. The $500 annual
scholarship was established by his widow, Alison Mizner, and their two
children, Sarah and David.  Mizner taught in the English Department at Colby
College from 1963 until his retirement in 1998.  One of his many courses was
The Holocaust: History, Literature, and Film.
The Lawrence Alan Spiegel Remembrance Scholarship is in memory of Larry
Spiegel, a 1966 graduate of Deering High School.  After graduating from
Amherst College in 1970, he returned to Maine as a reporter.  From 1978
until 1984, Larry served on Governor Brennan's staff as press secretary,
speech writer and special assistant.  Larry helped arrange the first
commemoration of the Days of Remembrance held at the Blaine House during
Joseph Brennan's governorship.  The scholarship is funded by The Lawrence
Alan Spiegel Remembrance Fund established by his parents, Anne and Jack
Spiegel.

available on the HHRC's website at www.hhrc.org.  The deadline is March 31
and scholarships will be awarded at the HHRC's annual meeting on June 2,
2002.
