Hello,

The Upward Bound Math Science (UBMS) Program is seeking summer staff with
graduate experience in the* BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES* to be *Group Facilitators
and Individual Project Mentors. *We are also hiring an* Individual Project
Coordinator *to start part-time in May, and full-time for the summer
program in June (see descriptions below)*. *

*Description of Positions:*

*Group Facilitators* guide a group of high school students through the Group
Design Project, which involves *innovative invention-based inquiry*.
Facilitators guide students through the process of designing a solution to
a problem presented by faculty and graduate students from EPSCoR's new
Aquaculture Initiative, and help students as they develop a “works like” or
“looks like” model, write a paper, and create a video of the experience.
The past two summers students groups have produced highly successful
innovations that have been used in science research and science education
on campus!

Individual Projects give Math Science students the opportunity to
investigate their intended college major and/or career field through a
hands-on research project or exploration. *Individual Research Project
Mentors* guide students on best practices in research within their academic
field and in the general scientific community. Projects are held Monday,
Tuesday, and Thursday afternoons from 1:00– 4:00pm. During their second or
third summer, students often have the chance to explore research in a
university laboratory, under the guidance of graduate students and faculty.
Students present their work on the last Monday evening of the summer program
at the Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) Symposium.
Final products also include written work in the form of a scientific paper,
based on models from their particular discipline. These papers are staff and
peer-reviewed and ultimately published in A Journal of Explorations.

The *Individual Project Coordinator* assists the Assistant Director in
coordinating all aspects of students' Individual Project experience. The
Project Coordinator helps locate of laboratory placements and mentors
(including graduate students, professors, and occasional off-campus
placements) to match UBMS students' college and career interests, leads
Individual Project orientation, purchases supplies, communicates with
mentors and full-time staff, and monitors student progress throughout their
projects. The Coordinator identifies students who are struggling with their
projects and links students with staff who can successfully complete their
projects. This person works closely with the Scientific Writing Instructor,
and also leads a poster tutorial class for rising juniors, overseeing the
professional poster creation and printing. The Coordinator organizes the
annual STEM Symposium at the end of summer program, the culminating event
for Individual Projects.
