*Lawmakers continue progress on state budget negotiations with key votes to
bolster college affordability *



Augusta -- Democrats and Senate Republicans on the Legislature’s
Appropriations and Financial Affairs Committee continued progress on budget
negotiations, taking important preliminary bipartisan votes.



On Sunday night, lawmakers on the budget panel voted for an additional
$10 million in new investment for scholarships for Maine students and
workers through the Maine State Grant program.



“It’s a big win for Maine students and workers to have additional funds to
help pay for college,”  said Rep. Peggy Rotundo, D-Lewiston, House Chair of
the Appropriations Committee. “More Maine students and workers will have
the opportunity to get a good education and better-paying job. We know
education is key to growing good jobs and strong wages.”



The committee also voted 9 to 4 in support of funding for four new drug
agents and state courts.



“Democrats and Senate Republicans came together to support responsible
votes to make our streets safer and to bolster our judicial system,” said
Senator Linda Valentino, D-Saco, who serves on the budget panel.



The committee also rejected the Governor’s changes to General Assistance.



Lawmakers on the budget panel expect to reconvene on Monday to continue
