It is with great sorrow that I let you know of the passing of former
Congressman Louis Stokes of Ohio, one of TRIO's first and fiercest
advocates. Due to his leadership on the House Appropriations Committee,
TRIO's funding grew from $70.3 million in FY 1976 to $562.2 in FY 1998,
when he retired from Congress. A founding member of the Congressional
Black Caucus, Mr. Stokes was one of the most thoughtful, principled and
respected Members of the House to serve throughout his tenure. We extend
to his loving wife Jay and his entire family our deepest sympathy.
