CHESTNUT HILL Mass., -- Brian Callahan and Marty Reasoner each had a pair of
goals, as Boston College used three power-play goals to defeat the
University of Maine Black Bears 5-3 on Saturday December 7.
FIRST PERIOD:
Both Greg Taylor and Javier Gorriti got the nod in nets for BC and Maine
respectively Saturday night. Maine won Friday night 6-3 behind a solid
performance by Gorriti, and a night where Taylor shined at times, but lost
his composure late in the game.
Saturday night's contest would not start out well for the Black Bears.
After some mild BC pressure, Jason Price was pulled off the ice for tripping.
BC was able to cycle in the Maine end, and force the Bears out of position.
In fact the Eagles frustrated Jason Mansoff into taking another Maine
penalty. This would give Boston College roughly a 50 second 5-on-3
advantage as two Bears sat in the box.
To Maine's credit they would kill off the early BC advantage. Maine
primarily kept BC on the outside, and didn't allow any odd man situations
down low. The few chances BC did put on Gorriti, he was able to turn away,
and the defense was solid in front of him.
For the first nine minutes of the first period, Boston College clearly had
the edge in play as they outshot the Black Bears 8-1. But it would be Maine
who would strike first.
As Greg Taylor came out of the BC net and played the puck, Dan Shermerhorn
bumped him just enough so that he lost his stick. David Cullen took a shot
from the point, Taylor couldn't control the rebound and Shermerhorn
deposited the puck behind him for his seventh goal of the season 9:37 into
the first.
That was Maine's fourth shot of the period. Maine would get only four more
shots the rest of the period, and would surrender a pair of goals.
With Brian White in the box for interference, Brian Callahan was able to
beat Jason Price to the front of the net and scored just 20 seconds after
Maine took the lead.
Less than two minutes later -- Maine seems to allow goals in bunches this
season -- Maine turned the puck over to BC's fourth line. BC came down
2-on-1 and Nick Pierandri would feed Chris Masters at 11:39 to give BC the
2-1 lead. Gorriti might have had a play on the goal, but was unable to come
up with the save.
Overall it was not a good period for Maine. They held BC to only 3 shots
the last 11 minutes of the period, but two of those shots were goals. This
was especially disappointing when you consider Maine strongly killed off a
5-on-3.
The period was played at BC's tempo, with more offensive chances and less
play along the boards with Maine's hard work able to pay off. The Maine
defense was not very tight, but Maine was not very organized offensively.
Twice Maine 2-on-1 breaks went offsides. Maine had a very disorganized
power play to end the period, and after a delay of game penalty on Joe
Harney, Maine would start the second with a 5-on-3 of their own.
SECOND PERIOD:
But Maine could do nothing with the advantage. They had one point shot on
the entire two-man advantage. Maine had some better chances on the 5-on-4,
but nothing spectacular.
While some of Maine's lines weren't functioning very well, Maine's fourth
line, Jason Vitorino, Ben Guite and Matt Oliver, was doing a good job and
they would get a goal.
Matt Oliver put home a Jeff Libby shot at 6:16 of the second and Maine tied
the score at 2-2.
But much like the first goal, where Brian White took a penalty soon after
(BC scored 20 seconds after the Maine goal), Jeff Libby would be whistled
for interference setting the stage for BC's second power-play goal of the
evening.
After another 2-on-1 break for Maine went off sides, Marty Reasoner
collected a rebound and used great patience as he moved to the slot and beat
Gorriti. This was clearly a breakdown by Maine, as no one played Reasoner
and he had all day to move into the slot and score. The goal came at 8:27
(just 2:11 after Maine's second goal). This put BC up 3-2
BC would get their third power-play goal of the evening, and the
game-winning goal of the night after Ben Guite knocked the Maine net off its
moorings during a BC flurry.
As BC stormed the Maine net, Gorriti would make the original save, but the
puck would pop in the air and sit in the goal crease near the goal line.
Gorriti almost recovered, but not before Callahan scored his second of the
night at 12:33.
Sixteen seconds later BC freshman Mike Mottau gave Maine a golden chance to
cut into the 4-2 BC lead taking a penalty at the 12:59 mark. But Maine
wouldn't be able to get the puck into the zone for the entire first minute
of the power play, due to some agressive forechecking by the Eagles, and
some poor passing by the Black Bears.
Shawn Wansborough would end the power play as he took an ill-advised penalty
behind the play. It was so far behind the play that the assistant referee
made the call, and to do that the referee must be in an entirely different
zone than the assistant referee behind the play.
The penalty would only end Maine's power play, but did not cost them in
terms of allowing another goal. In fact Maine would gain another power play
later in the period, and put on good pressure. Maine really picked up the
pace late in the period, but another Wansborough penalty with 1:23 left
would put Maine short-handed for the remainder of the period.
This was not a good call by Drew Taylor. Taylor whistled Wansborough for
tripping Kevin Caulfield, but as soon as Caulfield got up he tripped
Wansborough clearly in the sight of Taylor who was about to call
Wansborough, but let Caulfield's trip go.
THIRD PERIOD:
Maine would play a good third period Saturday night. They came right out of
the locker room and put together a solid performance, holding BC to only
five shots and getting some good looks at the net.
BC would get called for too many men on the ice early in the third, giving
Maine a very good opportunity to cut into the lead, but Greg Taylor stopped
what came to him.
The entire middle part of the period can be best characterized as missed
opportunities for Maine. They had several quality shots go wide or over the
net, some with open nets, Reg Cardinal hit the post and Greg Taylor made
some very nice saves.
BC had one great chance, as Marty Reasoner broke in, but Gorriti turned him
aside.
Brian White would pull Maine within one at 4-3 with just under four minutes
left in the game. Boston College had failed to clear the puck, White was
able to keep the puck in and just let one go and it beat Taylor as Roenick
was in front of him.
Gorriti made some saves late, especially on Ryan Mullhern who had a break
stopped by Gorriti, and Maine made a valiant attempt to tie the game,
pulling Gorriti and trying to tie the game up. But Marty Reasoner would
score an empty net goal, and end Maine's hopes with 13 seconds to go in the
game. The final score, BC 5, Maine 3.
COMMENTS:
Maine has had a problem with disipline at times this year, and it really
cost them Saturday night. They took some ill-advised penalties right after
goals that they scored, killing any momentum that they had, especially when
BC scored which they did twice.
Special teams, which won the game for Maine Friday, was in BC's corner
Saturday. The Eagles converted on 3 of 8 chances on the power play, and
killed off all six Maine power plays, clearly earning the victory. Maine
had several key power plays, but BC had a couple real good kills to preserve
the victory.
Gorriti played alright for Maine. He didn't get the best performance of the
guys in front of him, but he did give up too many rebounds that cost Maine.
One could argue that the defenseman should clear those rebounds, but a
goaltender has to be wary of when and where he is leaving rebounds. Gorriti
allowed four goals (fifth goal empty-net goal) and stopped only 20 shots.
The BC defense played well, rendering the Maine offense invisible at times.
Greg Taylor rebounded from an average performance Friday and turned in a
good effort stopping 25 of 28 shots in earning his first victory since
coming off the injury to his glove hand.
BC moves to 7-7-1, and 4-4-1 in Hockey East.
Maine (7-7-1, 2-5-1 in HE) will be off till December 20 when they host
Dalhousie in the first-round of the J.C. Penney Classic.
